The ball just explodes out of Nate Robertson's hand. His fastball looks like it is going in at 96 when its actually only 89-92.

Phillips loses his second HR of the series due to the 420 feet dimensions in center field.

Indeed.

A future 1-2-3 punch of Bonderman, Verlander, and Zumaya will be tough to match. Throw in Nate Robertson at the back end of the rotation and you have one of the best rotations in the game. The Tigers are a fun team to watch. I'm rooting for these guys to continue winning and maybe reach the playoffs. Detroit is a great baseball city and those fans deserve a winning team.

The Reds should be so lucky in the pitching department, though I suspect they are the envy of quite a few teams in MLB with the staff they have.

While I despise the Red Wings and Pistons, I agree Detroit deserves a winner [after today] on the baseball field.

I go away for two weeks and the entire world goes topsy-turvy I tell you. I'll just repeat what I said in the other game thread here:

Robertson cruised his first time through the lineup, but if this series is teaching us anything it's that actual good offense will show up fake good pitching.

Looking at his career statistics, he's always had a decent ERA--a little over 4, and he give up give a few hits over innings pitched. I could see him improving this much this year. Dunn and recently Larue just can't resist that low, just off the plate pitch.

Are you the posting police? It's a legitimate comment and not one meant to be said with sarcasm or derision. It was a simple observation, and a very accurate one. And outside of the starting pitching, CF defense is one of the more important factors negatively affecting the Reds. Last night was a perfect example.

So when a Reds CF makes a nice running catch that our everyday CF wouldn't got to, it's perfectly valid to point out that the play would not have been made by the other guy.

Griffey may not be the CF before his recent injuries, but we have no alternative at the moment. Denorfia is a remote possibility, but that's about it. And don't tell me Freel could do better, merely because he makes the occasional sparkling defensive play.

Everybody who's played CF for the Reds for the past six seasons has shown better range than Jr. Freel's fielding circles around him, just like everyone else does. Cyclone's provided you with plenty of numbers that show just how much the team suffers when Jr.'s in CF. Every season Jr. rates as one of the worst CFs in the game.

At this point, if you don't believe Jr. can't field the position then it's because you refuse to grasp the obvious.

reds44

A guy I would target for CF is Devil Rays prospect Elijah Dukes. He is a great defensive center fielder, plus he is hitting .315/.412/.535 in Triple-A. He has an attitude problem, but the same was said about Phillips and he has turned OK so far.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?clubs=&leagues=&t=s_pla&q=dukes
If Gathright keeps up his .550 OPS Dukes will be in Tampa soon.

I think that's a common misconception. The White Sox were close to the bottom in sacrifices, IIRC. But they were close to the top in HRs and EBHs. I just think it's silly to play for one run in the first inning against a team that's put up 24 runs in the past three games.

Ehhh living in Chicago I watched alot of the Sox last year. It was really that they bunted, but alot of the time they would just hit to the 2nd base side to get the runner to 3rd.

I don't think that what happened yesterday means anything, that's what I was getting at. I also don't think a win or a loss here will affect the way the team plays the next week. To me, the only thing that makes this a "big" game is the team is getting one of the better starts it will get this year. This should be a win regardless of opponent and schedule context.

It's not all that hard a concept to grasp. Even if Aurilia beats the odds and does something right here, the odds were still bad ones to play. Aurila has a .664 OPS against RHPs and Rodney allows a .462 OPS against RHBs. What happened -- Aurilia grounding out -- was almost a foregone conclusion with that matchup in this park.

Last night, the offense picks us up, but the bullpen/defense lets us down.

So far today, the pitching is brilliant and the offense absent.....

To me "chemistry" represents the quality of the players on the team. The Reds are who they are regardless of what happens today and this game won't change that "chemistry" one bit. The most I'd be willing to say about today's game is that a loss here would be unfortunate.
