Designated pitcher Esteban Yan for assignment; purchased the contract of pitcher Jered Weaver from Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

So are you suggesting the Reds should go after Yan?

No. Weaver exploded through the minors, last year at this time he hadn't even signed.

Oh OK, I just wasn't sure the meaning of the post.

Probably just to supply us with information. I must, however, expose my ignorance as I'm not familiar with either of these players and would love if someone could provide which team we're talking about here.

Jared Weaver was a top draft pick last year and is the younger brother of Dodger Jeff Weaver. Jared is supposed to be a future star.

Jared Weaver was a top draft pick last year and is the younger brother of Dodger Jeff Weaver. He was a top draft pick two years ago, he waited an enitre year before signing one week before the 2005 draft.

Yeah sorry I guess I should have posted that.

Another significant part of the post, for those that don't follow every major league team, is that he was called up by the Anaheim Angels. (Sorry but, as a resident of Orange County, I'm prohibited from referring to them as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. )

Thanks REM.

And thanks everyone for the additional info. I am now officially smarter!

He's a Boras client, to boot.

Actually, Jered is with the Angels, and so is Jeff. Jeff signed as a free agent this year, and is absolutely getting shelled.

My take on it is that he was a college pitcher, that even with the one year hold out is making his MLB debut this year... Homer Bailey is still a couple of years out. Where is our college pitcher Ryan Wagner?

Weaver's numbers in AAA thus far:

4-1, 2.05 ERA, 9 G, 8 GS, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 57 IP, 44 H, 13 ER, 4 HR, 66/8 K/BB, .214 BAA

Sexy line. The PCL is a hitter's league, so his only blemish (HR/9) might be more a result of pitching in bandboxes than anything.

I'm shocked the Jeff Weaver wasn't the one DFA'd.

I remember him sitting there for WEEKS looking for the big deal from Boros that came in a one year deal for the Los Angeles Angels (Not an Orange County resident) of Anahiem.

Anyway, why NOT the Los Angeles Angels? The Rams played in Anaheim for 15 years. Anaheim has the Ducks and should have the Clippers. The Angels made a mistake in naming the team in '66 when they moved to Anaheim. Look at the Meadowlands - one of the teams is called the New Jersey Devils, the other two who play in the football stadium are technically from New York.

oh, well -

What was wrong with that name anyway? :dunno:

LA Angels sounds lame.

Yep, but at the time they were playing in LA.

Los Angeles Angels. It just rolls off the tongue. IMO.

Plus, the LA hat with the silver halo around the crown absolutely rocked, IMO. I'd wear it.

Are you sure? I thought the old Colorado Rockies(NHL) were sold and moved to New Jersey?

Jerrod looking impressive with the exception of one inning where he gave up 2 hits only to get balled out by Vlads arm for a double play at the plate. 93-94 mph fastball... nice slider. Very good command of hist pitches.

Jered Weaver pitched an excellent game.

7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER/R, 1 BB, 5 K's

I watched about the first four innings. Looked very impressive. Definitely the real deal... now if only his brother can get it together for the halos.

Why isn't this guy in the yahoo fantasy leagues yet? It's just the Yahoo way of doing things. It took them forever to get Brandon Phillips in there, well after his amazing tear to earn the NL Pllayer of the Week.
