MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins announced Jewish Heritage Day would be celebrated last Sunday and that they would give away T-shirts with the likeness of Mike Jacobs.

The only problem was that Jacobs is not Jewish and no one on the club asked him if he was.

The Marlins are trying to explain the obvious mixup. A club official said that the T-shirts and the observance of Jewish Heritage Day were not related.

That might float if it had not been for the fact that the giveaway was prominently featured in a full-page ad about the day in a local Jewish newspaper.

According to the Marlins media guide, last Sunday was also Youth Baseball and Softball Day. And the Marlins said that's why the first 5,000 kids entering the ball park for the finale of a three-game series against the New York Mets were given Jacobs T-shirts.

That explanation is also is a little shaky. Jacobs isn't exactly tearing the cover off the ball. He got off to a slow start and is batting .231.
