ST. LOUIS -- Ken Griffey Jr. picked up momentum on the field lately for the Reds, and now the center fielder appears to have done the same with All-Star voters.
In balloting results revealed on Monday, Griffey leaped over the Cardinals' Jim Edmonds into third place among National League outfielders.
Braves center fielder Andruw Jones leads all NL outfielders with 582,749 votes. Carlos Beltran of the Mets has received 499,693 votes to date.
Griffey (479,963) leads Edmonds (444,094) by 35,869 votes.
If Griffey remains in the top three of the outfield vote, the 36-year-old would be elected a starter to the 77th All-Star Game, to be played July 11 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Griffey, who has amassed more than 39 million votes over 18 seasons, has been elected an All-Star starter 12 times and has a .435 career average while playing in eight of the games. He's been elected twice while with Cincinnati, the last time in 2004, but injuries have prevented him from participating while wearing a Reds uniform.
With 544 career home runs entering Monday, 12th on the all-time list, Griffey was batting .274 with eight homers and 30 RBIs this season. He had five homers and 14 RBIs over his last 16 games.
Reds left fielder Adam Dunn ranked in 11th place among outfielders with 229,840 votes.
Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols leads all NL players with 1,041,466 votes.
