Since we're all ... well most of us ... really Reds fans, hopefully we all are too. :D

Glad I didn't wait up. :D :D

Has somebody pm'd the next two? If you're going to be sleeping, I'll be around for a while, so I can keep that up if you want.

I PM'd the next three(rdriesen, stewie, and ramp)

Only stewie has responded. He plans on PM'ing me his picks because he will be gone from 9:00 to 2:00.

I plan on going to sleep pretty soon and getting up around noonish. Is it OK if Stewie sends his picks to you since I'll probably be sleeping when he picks?

Yep. I'm up for the duration, I think, and I don't have specific plans until later. If I have to leave for an extended time, I'll post let someone else know. But I should be around until later.

If anyone cares, I pm'd OBM the group I'm considering for the Astros if they are still on the board when my turn comes. Just so no one is concerned since I'm coming up at 23.

OBM should modify page one on this thread to indicate what picks were made in the slots.

That would make it real easy for the scan of who's off the table.

With the 19th overall pick in the 2006 Amateur Draft, The Florida Marlins select catcher Hyun "Hank" Conger from Huntington Beach HS.

On a side note, here is my writeup on him I did for maverickball.com:

Born Hyun Conger, his grandfather gave him the nickname of “Hank” after the Hall of Famer Hank Aaron. Hank has lived up to his nickname’s billing so far as he is one of the more intriguing power prospects in the draft. The switch-hitting catcher put himself on the map 6 years ago when he hit 34 homeruns for his Huntington Beach Little League team and brought them within 1 win of the Little League World Series. After a weak year defensively his junior year, scouts wondered if he could actually stick behind the plate. With lots of practice with Brent Mayne, he has turned himself into a solid backstop. He showed great footwork, and improved arm strong his senior year and got enough good vibes going with the scouts that he could stick behind the plate in his future. Eventually, Hank may move out from behind the plate to one of the corner infield spots, but at that point, his bat might be worthy of those positions anyway. Still known most for his bat, Hank hit .449 with 11 homeruns, 7 doubles, and 1 triple this season at Huntington Beach HS. Right now, Conger is compared to A’s prospect Daric Barton with more power, but slightly less hitting ability. In all seriousness, where do I sign? The Marlins havent had a legit hitting catching prospect in the minors since Charles Johnson way back in 1992. Sure, Josh Willingham was considered a catching prospect but he only played there because he was blocked at every other position. Last season the Marlins drafted Nevada Wolfpack standout Brett Hayes in the 2nd round but he is more of a Mike Redmond than a Charles Johnson. If Kyle Drabek has already been selected, and assuming Drew Stubbs isnt still on the board, you got to think that the Marlins may take a shot at having a hitting catcher in the system, something they are missing.

Caveat Emperor
06-03-2006, 02:36 PM
Two pitchers for the Nats in the first round.

All signs point to Bowden wanting Butler, but I really don't think he can pass up Kyle Drabek with one of those two picks of his -- ceiling on the kid is simply too high.

Oh yeah, and relax -- we'll get our 5-Tool outfielder in Round #2.

SandyD

Pick #23:

The Astros select

Kyle McCulloch, rhp, Texas

SandyD
06-03-2006, 02:43 PM
Boring, I know. But it's the Astros after all. He's a college pitcher, and he's from Texas. How could I pass him up?

I wanted to rock the boat and pick a bat, but ... oh, well. There's always rounds two and three.

NC Reds
06-03-2006, 02:44 PM
Kyler Burke Ooltewah HS L/L 6'3" 205 1988-04-20 HS 350K
Comments: A toolsy outfielder, he's got all five, particularly power. A pretty good LHP, but future lies in OF. He's the best high school talent to come out of Tenn. since Todd Helton.

The only thing the Braves love more than drafting HS players is drafting a HS player who lives within driving distance of Atlanta.

At 24, Atlanta selects Kyler Burke, OF, HS (Tennessee),

Sandy - Do you know if the Astros are leaning toward the local kid, or toward drafting the best guy? (not saying he's NOT the best guy, just curious)

Caveat - Does Jimbo have full control over the draft or is the new ownership getting involved under the radar at all? I watched Butler's video and didnt see the problems with his delivery that some were mentioning. How is the level of competition for UC - San Diego?

I have no clue. I wasn't really able to find much from local sources.

I just know that Texans kind of like Texans. He wasn't even in my line of thought before this morning when I saw he was still available.

I know Jason Lane and Morgan Ensberg are both hoping for Ian Kennedy, but Puffy nixed that.

BTW, I have pm'd all parties remaining the regular first round with their status except M2 who I saw on the board recently, so he should know where we stand.

UC San Diego plays out in the West Coast Conference -- you usually get some decent teams out there due to the fact that most of the teams play in fair weather for the majority of the year. Pepperdine consistently fields a decent team (they've been to the CWS regionals on a regular basis over the last few years.

And, incidentally, I agree with Butler's video. His delivery looks fine -- the fact that he's a college pitcher makes me less worried about his delivery. He's made it this far.

As far as Bowden goes, I have no idea how much control he has remaining. I just assume that new ownership will rubberstamp his picks unless they're really out in left field.

Me too. It was literally a case of him being the highest-rated guy left. I figured I wouldn't argue with all the folks who've scouted him and rated him so high. I still rather would have had Antonelli mind you, thought the Reds should have tried to lure him three years ago.

The Orioles with the 32nd pick draft Bryan Morris, rhp, Motlow State (Tenn.) CC
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...es/261330.html
Couldn't work things out with the Devil Rays last spring but remains under control, and with his stuff (94-96 mph fastball, big, hard curve), he's not likely to re-enter the draft.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...ws/261479.html
The Devil Rays selected Morris in the third round out of Tullahoma (Tenn.) High last June, and they eventually agreed on a $1.4 million bonus. But Tampa Bay's former front office twice delayed finalizing the deal, prompting Morris to attend Motlow State (Tenn.) Community College, where his father Ricky is an assistant coach.

Morris' maintained his quality stuff this spring, showing his trademark power curveball and a 90-95 mph fastball with late life. He led Tennessee juco pitchers with a 0.91 ERA and also pulled double duty as a center fielder, a role in which he broke a bone in his left wrist on a headfirst slide. As with Beato, Morris' mechanics and command could use some improvement.

"At the end of the day, we couldn’t reach an agreement," Devil Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "We wish him well in the future. Now we’re focused on the upcoming draft."

Thanks, I think so, too. Chris Marrero going right before me was what really threw me for a bit. My bad for taking a little long on that one. I didn't want to take another pitcher, since the Phillies have some decent arms in the farm system, yet nothing offensively. But the hitters I was looking at just have too many question marks, mainly that they are just too "toolsy." I figured Mulvey was the safe pick, and the Phillies like to keep it safe. The local factor doesn't hurt, either. Of course, the Phillies also love their "toolsy" guys, so who knows.

Yeah, I had my ACL replaced with a piece of my hamstring and my meniscus cleaned up for the second time in a little over a year April 25th thanks to Doc Hollywood and his staff. I have been able to walk almost normally without a brace or crutches for about 2 weeks now, so life is getting a little easier to move around with. Just gotta rehab for 3 hours a day.

M2, I hope your knee heals up real well. I know how it is with being unable to do stuff. I was like that for about the first week of my surgery, but after that with crutches and the rehab I was able to get around a little more each week. I have never heard about that machine you are talking about, that actually sounds like a real good idea. My knee still gets real stiff If I am not bending it often, so I still have to do quite a lot of stretching every day to get it to the point where things feel good. Again, get well M2.

I am leaving in about 20-30 minutes, so I think OBM will me making my pick for me in the second round, but he has 3 guys on my list, all that are currently available. I should be back around 3 or 4, but I hope for the rest of you guys that my pick has been made by then!

OK, I just checked TRF's post history and I have noticed a theme - he very, very rarely posts on the weekends, and when he does it's usually late at night.

Should we move on and give him the best player available?

Should we institute a rule now of no more than an hour between picks or they will get the BPA if they didnt send OBM a list? We still have 2 rounds to do.

Nope.

I assume you pm'ed him? Maybe that'll go to his email and alert him. I'd even go so far as to say 30 minutes rather than an hour. Long way to go.

I PM'd him five hours ago and have yet to get a response. I'm guessing he works on the weekends, which would explain him never posting on weekends.

A time limit is fine with me, btw.

TRF does not work on weekends, he has a family though and chances are he might be at church or some family event it's still only morning where he is.

Well guys I am out of here for my brothers HS graduation (I am a proud one of that). The three guys before me better not all pick my 3 guys I want! OBM, if you get to your pick before I get back, made the Reds pick a good one!

I think he was watching for his pick last night. He's in central time, so if he's a church goer, that's where he probably is.

How about this:
pm the next 5 people on the list who aren't either on-line or haven't provided OBM with their picks. Give them until about another hour to get here and get their picks in. If not, we'll take the best available ...

I may be away from the computer later on today for a little, who wants to take over as "commish" if I'm gone.

All I basically do is PM the posters who aren't online and remind them that their pick is coming up.

SandyD

We should set some guidelines for the rest of the day. If these guidelines are posted by game time, most people who are available on the weekend will see them.

I say we try to get at least 5 picks an hour. That way, we can get all of the second round, and supplement done today. I'm guessing we can get the third round done tomorrow, even if we don't get it started today.

I'd volunteer, but I'm going to be away later too. I'm leaving in about an hour, for about 2 hours. Should be back by 3-4 CDT.

OnBaseMachine

How long of a time limit should we set? Five picks per hour would be a 12 minute limit.

After checking TRF's post history again, I noticed that the last time he posted on a weekend was the Sunday before Opening Day.

Do you guys want to wait or give him the best player? I'm fine with either choice.

SandyD
06-04-2006, 12:40 PM
I'm in central time, so I'm using those times.

If we give the next five until 12:30 CDT to respond, we'll have those picks by game time. If we try for 5 pics an hour after that, we'll be done with the second round by 7pm CDT, even allowing for delays. For example: I wouldn't expect anyway to be making picks during the ninth inning of the Reds game like we saw last night. We could probably finish the third round by midnight CDT if we wanted to push it. As long as we set guidelines now, everyone will have time to read them and know what is expected.

I was just looking at the draft order, after TRF and 2844 pick this thing could move at a very quick pace. All the other posters in round two are either online or have already sent their picks to me.

SandyD

In truth, I'm fine either way. I think he was online yesterday, though, probably to check status of the draft. I do think we should set guidelines.

I'd set the time limit as 10 minutes.

cincinnati chili
06-04-2006, 12:45 PM
Is he West coast? If so, and if he goes to church, I think we might want to make an exception and give him until noon Pacific. But generally during "waking hours" when people aren't likely at church or watching a Reds ninth inning rally I think the half hour is plenty of time... Particluarly when OBM gives the option of pm'ing your picks

OnBaseMachine

Thanks and best of luck to you too.

I actually had Nancy Kerrigan's knee guy do my surgery. I'd been without an ACL for almost 15 years and my tibia had developed an ever-larger shimmy over that time, so I was mondo looking forward to this surgery. I've heard a lot of good things about using the cadaver part. Supposedly the recovery is a lot quicker (partially because they aren't carving up other parts of your body for the replacement equipment). Also, the Achilles is much stronger material than an ACL. So when it sets my knee supposedly will be better connected that it was originally.

The machine they've got me on does a real nice job, keeps the knee loose, prevents adhesions from forming. Basically I've been sleeping with it running.

The knee only got real painful the first night when the groovy hospital meds wore off. I went off the vicodin with about 1/3 of the scrip left, can't imagine why people take that stuff for fun.

Obviously I've got a lot of PT in front of me, but I'd been meaning to get more exercise. This will just force me to do it.
