Last year I tried to put together a Redszone mock draft at the last minute, but it never came to fruition as I waited too long. This year I am starting earlier in hopes of getting this thing done.

I was thinking maybe we could do a two round draft and and each poster (GM) would get two minutes to make his pick. We could possibly hold the draft a few days before the real MLB draft, maybe on the first Sunday or Monday of June. Whatever works best for you guys.

Each poster is limited to one team, although some teams will have more than just two picks in the two round draft due to compensation picks. Anyone else up for this idea? If so, sign up here by picking your team. After all the teams are taken, then we can discuss what day this should held, what time, and some other details.

BTW, the draft will be held in the minor league forum. I just stuck this post here so that it would get more views right now.

Here is the draft order:

What if we can't make the draft. I'd like to do it, but if it's on a Sunday, I probably won't be able to do it.

If you want to take a chance on me as a GM, I'll take the Indians. They don't have a first round pick, and their first pick is #39, so that may work better for me.

I actually think 3 might be perfect.

The end of the 3rd round puts us right at 106 total players drafted

But I'm cool either way. Two works just as well for me.

The Cardinals - with four picks in the first two rounds, are the team with the most available that hasn't been claimed yet.

Phillies, Marlins, Giants and Dbacks all have three picks and are available.

I figure the Sabean's hoping Luke Hochevar doesn't sign with the Dodgers so he can draft the guy and then lowball him. That way he either gets his top pick at a discount or he doesn't have to worry about paying him at all.

Hope to make a big splash with my last pick, pick #75.

Going to have to do a lot of research on that one.

Can we get a BA top 200 list posted? I don't have a subscription to BA and want to do some research on some of the players that might be available to me.

Monday during the day is pretty much out for me. I can't do it while at work. I'd have to call in sick, and since I've been out already, that alone could get me into trouble.

Internet use is strictly prohibited at my workplace, and the CEO is also my department manager, and micromanages everything. He passes by my desk several times a day, too.

I think two minutes per pick during the workday would be ambitious, and probably impossible. I know that if I get stuck on a project, I won't be able to check the internet at work.

Did you do this last year, and how long did it take?

My suggestion is to START it during the day, but to expect the chain to get broken at some point during the workday until evening. At least that's what used to happen in my Sandbox leagues.

[addition] if for some reason, Sandy and I are the only ones who can't do it from work. (She definitely can't, and I probably can't), I'd be happy to p.m. the "commish" (on base) my picks in advance). Since I'm Brian Sabean, I'm fairly certain nobody's going to pick my guys where I'm picking them.

CC beat me to it. I think OBM - since we have over a week left - you should get an email address for anyone who may have computer connection or timing issues and prepare that it may take all day to complete. Perhaps even starting it Sat or Sunday and letting it run for a day or so would be a good idea.

If you do it on Monday - for example, and start it at 9am your time - guess what, that's 6am for me. I love you guys and all, but I'm not getting up at 6 to do a mockdraft on a workday.

I would start a thread - and prepare that it may take 2 days. I don't see that as a bad thing.

TRF has the first pick in the draft... so if he chooses to, he can make his pick on Friday and then the next team(you) can make your pick, whether it be a minute later or five hours later.

Is everyone OK with that?

That sounds good to me. I have similar work issues where I can't always be on during the day next Monday but if we let it run over a few days everyone can work it around their own schedules.

I would.
If I was advising a young pitcher, that is what I would do. If I'm Tommy Tanzer, Matt Sosnick or Scott Boras, I'm steering my client towards San Diego and Los Angeles.

I wouldn't doubt that it hasn't happened already over the years.

But I think that after another couple of years with Aaron Cook, Jason Jennings and Jeff Francis, and the much publicized humidor, that stigma will slowly start fading away.

I agree with what M2 said earlier about college junior pitchers IN GENERAL, but I don't think Miller will play holdout games with the Rockies. Having watched interviews with him, you can almost hear regret for having gone to college. He was in the same H.S. class as Delmon Young and Chad Billingsley. He thinks he's as good as them (maybe he's right), and sees them in Triple-A now, a hair from the majors and thinks he could be there right now. Realistically, he won't reach triple A now until '07 or '08, and that's barring setbacks.

In other words, he's itching to play pro ball right now.

He's cocky, which can be good. But he sure looks to me like the best talent and the most likely pitcher to succeed in the draft. So unless the Rockies uncover something negative, I'd take him at 2 if he's avail (like Jim did).

No worries. There is a negative chance of me drafting a high school pitcher. I made a comment in another thread a few weeks ago that I would rather stick my "package" in a blender rather than watch the Reds select a HS pitcher in the first round of this draft.;)

Starter. Some feel he will end up as a closer due to his short stature, but I think he stays as a starter. I've heard him compared to Roy Oswalt due to his size, mid 90's fastball, and great curveball. MLB.com thinks the Reds will draft him, which would thrill the hell out of me.

No, I think we have to wait. If a PM has been sent to both of them, give them an hour from when the PM was sent. We can't just go on and skip over 2 teams. How are we to know who they would have picked? This is a marathon (all weekend), not a sprint. If the hour after the PM has been sent and they do not show, then try and find replacement GM's for those two teams.

Lincecum as the #1 pick? Intriguing, TRF, but I don't think the Royals will be in risk mode, even though Allard Baird is fired the minute the draft ends. I think they'll take Miller.

I also think Hochevar is probably a little high. High in the draft order, not high like Jeff Allison or whatever. But I'm sure there's a chance the Pirates would go for it if Littlefield and McClatchy were able to get the pre-draft deal with Scott Boras.

Even though this mock draft is as decent a guess as any, I have the distinct feeling high school players, both hitters as well as pitchers, will get taken disproportionately lower than the likely outcome. Not that that's the purpose of this draft, necessarily. I know what it's really for- it's for sticking in the archives so people can gloat two or three years from now about how prescient their picks were. :)

Jay Bruce is more likely a corner guy, from what I hear. He is not a "true" CFer, Stubbs is. I'm not sure what is coming up in question of Stubbs bat, he's got a mid .400s OBA. (from Sonsofsamhorn and elsewhere) What Do You Need to Know About Me?- Some scouts and baseball people have remarked that I have the strongest hand/wrists they have ever seen. Where does this come from? The strict schedule of 7 intense workout sessions each week. 3 times a week at 5:30 in the morning and 4 times a week at 8 o'clock at night. I take over 1000 swings a week, which include using my two free periods during the school day to drive to the batting cages and work on my stroke. Yes, I am the baseball equivalent of a gym rat. Because I don't have superior size, I will always have to work harder than my peers to stay on top. This season, I am gaining recognition from those peers. Fellow Texas A&M recruit Clayton Kershaw, who also figures to go in the top 10 picks, calls me the best hitter he has ever seen. This year, my senior season, everything came together. I have been pounding the balls to all fields. I won the Texas 4-A triple crown, batting .676 with 19 HR and 58 RBI. The only other player to do that in recent memory is Texas Rangers rookie, Jason Stokes. Though I have played outfield in high school, many scouts think I will be moved to 2B in the pros. Wherever I play, I will hit.

The last I checked we hadn't even finished handing out all the teams (Oakland I think was still ava.), now I miss out on all the fun.

Oh, You haven't missed all the fun. In fact, I suspect there's several more days of fun. Hopefully, we'll finish before the real draft.

Clayton Kershaw was projected in the top 7 in nearly every draft I have seen and he is now still available at 14...of course Steel wont take him, so he will fall to 15. Interesting stuff so far in our little mock draft.

I love irony.

I'll be golfing tomorrow - so if by chance my pick comes up - I am, as I am typing this, sending OBM my picks. So angry masses - blame him.
