So we've got so far:

1.) A 5 tool outfielder that probably will struggle with a wood bat

and

2.) A college closer with a plus-4 ERA.

GUESS THE NEXT REDS DRAFT PICK:

A.) A prep two-sport star (debate and squash) with a .500 Pinch Hit batting average.

B.) A college bullpen catcher

C.) Rick White's kid brother Bill.

jmcclain19
06-06-2006, 02:51 PM
Scouts have had a long time to evaluate Valaika against quality competition. He was on three USA Baseball teams, winning a gold medal in 2001 with the youth national team and a silver medal in 2003 with the Pan American Games junior national team. He earned a gold medal at the World University Games with the college national team in 2004 as an infield reserve behind future first-round picks Jed Lowrie, Troy Tulowitzki and Ryan Zimmerman. However, Valaika hit a speed bump last year when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He has worked hard to come back and doesn't wear a brace on his knee. He's a hard worker with solid-average tools. Most of his success owes to his good hands. He shows quick hands at the plate that generate average power, particularly inviting for a player who should stay in the infield defensively. Valaika's hands work well in the infield, though his range at shortstop is below-average and he's a fringe-average runner. With better patience at the plate, Valaika's power should increase. His makeup is a significant plus. He can play second base and has enough arm for third, making him an ideal utility infielder.

Eh -- it's all reactionary first impression stuff.

Top guys flame out constantly, nobodies become all-stars. Guys outperform their scouting reports sometimes, guys underperform their scouting reports sometimes. That's the way things work in baseball. We all know that, but it doesn't stop us from still living in the moment.

you guys havent seen them play yet, why are you already bashing them?

Because there is talent available, real good talent, and yet, they keep passing it over for a closer with a 4+ ERA and a 1.40+ WHIP and a guy that projects as a UTIL player. How exactly are those types of players going to turn this franchise around?

Looks like Reds are going for college players who can fill gaps in the system fairly quickly. This may be due to philosophy or because it is a weak draft and Reds didn't think a lot of high school "projectable" arms was the way to go.

Perhaps Reds will now go for some starting pitchers to add depth to that position. Doesn't seem like a great Reds draft, but you could see all three picks being in the high minor leagues quickly.

After a football game last fall when Reed ran for four touchdowns and more than 400 yards, he traveled to Atlanta the next morning and was on a baseball field with Team USA for the final junior national team trials. Reed didn't make the team, but he made a good impression. He has been offered a football scholarship to Mississippi but is expected to sign with a team that drafts him in the first five rounds. His exceptional work ethic makes up for his below-average instincts. He profiles as a table-setting center fielder, and has drawn comparisons to Tim Raines and Matt Lawton. He's a 60 runner on the 20-80 scouting scale, but his defensive game is unrefined. His arm is average to a tick below. Reed improved at the plate as a senior, shortening his swing and making sharper contact. He will hit the ball to all fields with gap to gap power. Reed doesn't profile as a corner outfielder, so his ability to become a reliable center fielder will be paramount.

Looks like the Reds are having some "blind" scouting, though that is subjective, as I said, considering the newness, don't expect a ton from this draft.

We have not drafted a Homer Bailey(complete package, smooth release type that needs seasoning) or Wood(great changeup, short, but very athletic) either.

This draft probably won't provide much pitching, which makes me wonder if Cast won't be opening up the checkbook this offseason. Deno and Votto are most likely on the block as well.

Y'all are killing me. These threads are always classic. Who seriously knows anything more about this SS than what they just read on mlb.com? And calling for someone to be fired on 3 picks in a draft of 50 guys? Again, you're splitting my side.

This is my favorite time of year, we get an influx of talent, and everybody is calling for the GM or scouting directors head because they don't pick who they wanted.

I remember how many people two years ago were calling for Dan O'Brien's head because he took the best high school arm over a SS that ended up flaming out in Colorado. That high school arm is now our top prospect and the same people criticizing the pick are now arguing over whether or not we should rush him to the majors.

There goes Degerman, not a bad pick by the Cards.

The Cards just took Degerman, so we might get to see plenty of him going forward.

10 minute break before round five starts

2 hours 40 minutes to get 4 rounds in.

That is the end of round 4. Probably another break before they start round 5.

Has Danny Almonte been taken yet?

The Reds haven't made their 5th round pick yet :)

10 minute break before round five starts

Wow. That's ridiculous.

Is it really necessary to have a break after every round? I don't ever remember them doing this.

This might be a decent draft - if these were picks 9-13. I'm particularily impressed that we spent two top5 picks on our future CF and his possible future backup (not to mention a honest-to-gosh utility infield prospect) while completely ignoring starting pitchers and corner bats. And I had such high hopes...<sigh> :bang:

They can create a new kind of platoon, a road/home one.

They will certainly have enough centerfielders to platoon.

Maybe the theory is that it takes 10 centerfielders to replace Ken Griffey, Jr.

Tell that to Ol' Man Griff... ;)that's the exact reason they can get away with playing him in CF. The penalty is much less in those 81 home games. If their home park was Comerica, or a number of others, Jr would not be the everyday CF but in GABP the penalty for his lack of speed is negated to an extent by having much less ground to cover.

It seems fairly likely that Buckley and the Reds will try to convert Watson to starting, a la David Bush (also a 2nd round pick). But here's the obvioulsy-begged question: why go to the trouble? Why not take a guy who's ALREADY a starter?

They must really be enthralled by that knuckle curve.

Buckley is either stupid, or unconventional. I love what he did was David Bush though, have to give him credit there. I'd love to have a David Bush in the reds rotation. So maybe he sees the same kinds of qualities. We can only hope..

Or perhaps he steps into the pen this year :P

I would convert him to a starter just to see how it works out. Richie Gardner also had underwhelming stats in his last season at Arizona, and he turned out quite well before going down to injury, however, there is one big difference between Gardner and Watson - Richie wa a 6th rounder, Watson is a 2nd rounder. They should have taken someone who was already a starter, say a Steven Wright.

I think the Reds are filling holes here. A college athletic outfielder (in case current OFs leave). An advanced reliever (certainly a need area). A utility infielder (as RA gets older). Perhaps you're right, but I think they would like to stockpile relievers, particularly with all the older guys now in the pen.
