CHICAGO -- Radio station WDFN-AM (1130) reported Thursday that Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young has entered the Betty Ford Center, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in southern California.

WDFN cited an unidentified source close to Young as the basis of its report.

WDIV-TV Local 4 reported Young entered rehab, citing unnamed sources.

Young's agent, Adam Katz, did not return a call seeking comment.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski referred a call about Young to the club's media relations department, which issued this statement: "Dmitri remains away from the club dealing with a personal matter." The club said it could not comment further.

As of Thursday, Young was still due to appear in 48th District Court in Bloomfield Hills on Tuesday for a pretrial hearing on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence.

Young has been away from the Tigers for 2 1/2 weeks, ever since he went on the disabled list because of recurring trouble with the quadriceps muscle in his upper right leg. At the time, Dombrowski granted Young an indefinite leave of absence to deal with what Dombrowski called personal issues.

The leave came less than a week after Young was arraigned on the domestic-violence charge. Young is accused of trying to choke his then-girlfriend during an argument April 14 at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. If convicted, Young faces a maximum of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Previous vilolent incidents usually lead to plea bargaining to lighten the load of a current issue.

This reeks of that.
