My choice would be Chris Welsh. If not his son Thom.

Is Stewart doing a bad job? I heard him last year and thought he was a real yawner without much personality, but I believe that was his 1st year in the booth. Or was it his 2nd? I've probably only listened to a combined 5 innings this year, so I don't know if he's improved. I think Welsh would do a good job as a color guy away from Grande. Thom's a PBP guy and is set in AZ. Lives out there and his wife is a local. Add in the Fox gig and I don't think you'll ever see him back Yawnopolis.

Pete Rose......really.

I hate to be the one to burst someone's bubble, however.........................

That topic was discussed heavily on this forum several years ago. We all came to the realization that it will never happen, mostly because he will never be reinstated in his lifetime. And also, Marty himself has said it will never happen as long as he is the voice of the Reds.

What's Marty's problem with Pete? (BTW, I missed the initial discussion....darn newbies)

Does Pete have to be reinstated to broadcast games?

What's Marty's problem with Pete?

Marty and Pete had a very professional relationship for several years. I do not know all the specifics of Marty's feelings toward Pete, but I know that their relationship has turned sour. I do recall back in 1989 on Pete's pregame interviews with Marty when he denied over and over that he had gambled on baseball. Maybe Marty feels as if this compromised Marty's jornalistic integrity.

Does Pete have to be reinstated to broadcast games?

Yes. Broadcasters are employed by the team.

Pete Rose's first appearance at Great American Ball Park barely caused a ripple of commotion.

Rose, in town to take part in an Anthony Munoz Foundation Fundraiser, purchased four Diamond Seats at $225 apiece for Sunday's game.

He arrived about an hour before the game and went directly to the Diamond Club restaurant, where he ate brunch with other fans.

Rose remains under the lifetime ban from baseball that he accepted in 1989 for activities related to gambling and is not allowed access to the field, clubhouse or press box. That does not, however, keep him from attending a game.
"He's allowed to do anything a fan can do," said John Allen, the Reds' chief operating officer.

Pete Rose, Sr. is allowed to attend major league games as a spectator. I dont think he's allowed in the clubhouses or on the field. I believe there is a stipulation whereas he must purchase his own ticket.

Team Clark and I were at Rose, Jr's debut game at Riverfront. The place was buzzing with all that "electricity" and anticipation in the air knowing that Rose, Sr. was going to show up. Shortly before game time, Rose Sr. came down an aisle and made his way to a seat near the Reds' dugout. Fans stood and cheered, the place went nuts. I imagined that it would of been like Elvis coming back and going to a ballgame. Longtime Reds equipment manager Bernie Stowe came out of the dugout and walked to the railing near Rose's seat. Rose vigorously shook Bernie's hand and was very happy to see him. A few other Reds ballplayers walked to the railing to greet Pete.

I like Stewart, as well, but I would like to hear an enthusiastic homer again on the radio, much like Joe was when he was a little younger. I don't know who that would be, but there is something nice about turning on the radio and hearing someone call the game who wants the team to win as badly as the audience does.

Who would I pair Marty with? How 'bout 'Duct Tape'?

A more appropriate question might be to ask who would you pair Steve with? Tell Marty it's time to retire the 'mike' and pair someone with Steve that can actually announce a game without going off on personal tangents, inside jokes and the ever obligitory 'Marty's Rant of the Game'.

Wrong question. Marty needs to "return" to the TV booth and his contentious relationship with the Creeper (like during the middle innings, late '90s) George needs to return to StL "pronto"

Leave the radio broadcasts to Stewie, Nuxie and whomever

I think Marty would be good for the boob tube. He doesnt describe the game as it goes so that would be a good fit.

Having two people who never played the game is mind numbinlgy boring and would be nice to have someone who can relate to the game. and NOT Tracy Jones. That guys is a major league imbecile.

He's allowed to attend games as a fan. He can't do anything a normal fan wouldn't do (like visit the clubhouse, etc). IIRC, he did watch his son's game as a fan.

I agree. There's no one to really add any flavor to the broadcast. Steve montonously does play by play. Marty talks about a bunch of off topic stuff, unless he feels like bashing a player in his doghouse.

We need an articulate former player that isn't a shock jock wannabee (like Jones). I'm in fantasy land, but if it was totally up to me, I'd fire Marty and Steve, and bring in Larkin and another ex-player, like maybe Brenly or Brantley. I don't see the need to have a play by play specialist (like Steve and Marty). Anyone can say what's happening. The skill is making it interesting.

Another beef I have with Reds radio broadcasts is that Marty and Steve seldom go out of their way to try to give us some new info. Marty is so lazy, he just lets the sportswriter do all the digging and then acts bored with what the writer says. If Marty likes the writer, he tries to steer the conversation off topic, otherwise he tries to get rid of the writer as soon as possible. It's very annoying to hear Marty complain the next day about how he "couldn't get rid of" the sportswriter the day before. Geez, Marty, show a little professionalism. The papers pay to get those writers on the air. Marty acts as if the purpose of the writers is to solely help keep him entertained on his "grueling" job.

Thinking outside the box for a moment, how about Bob Uecker?

He's an articulate PBP announcer who played the game, plus he's got the same Ford Frick award on his mantle. His less acerbic version of tell-it-like-it-is would be a good counterweight to Marty's gloves-off criticism. He's also self-deprecating, which Marty is not.

Ueck would probably never leave Milwaukee, but this is all hypothetical anyway, right? ;)

Uecker is great. I have listened to him this year and remember him on TV doing Monday Night Baseball in the 1970's.

I love Uecker's style, he's one of my favorites. With all this stalking drama he's going through maybe he'd welcome a change of scenery, or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part:)

Then I wish they would lock the door to the booth.

Marty spends more time entertaing quest in the booth and reading silly e-mails than he does calling PBP nowdays. JMHO.
