Clear Channel swaps local programming
The "Sports Animal" has chased Jerry Springer out of his home at WCKY-AM 1530.

Clear Channel Communications Inc. will move its sports-talk programming, known as "Homer" and the "Sports Animal," from WSAI-AM 1360 to the 1530 dial position. That will give the sports-talk format a 50,000-watt broadcast signal, 10 times more powerful than the current home of Clear Channel sports talkers Tom Gamble, Richard Skinner and Lance McAlister.

Clear Channel's "progressive talk" format, now on WCKY, will move to WSAI, effective July 7. The move means a weaker signal for the liberal talk show hosts that now populate WCKY, including former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer, comedian Al Franken and other national feeds from Air America.

"Homer's always done well, whether it be ratings or revenue," said Clear Channel Program Director Darryl Parks, Clear Channel's local director of AM operations. "We just figured we can maximize it," with the signal boost, he said.

Homer has the broadcast rights for the Cincinnati Bengals and recently became the radio home of University of Kentucky basketball. It also is the local affiliate for Fox Sports Radio.

It is one of eight radio stations operated in Cincinnati by Clear Channel Communications Inc. (NYSE: CCU), a global media and entertainment company based in San Antonio, Texas.

This gets a HUGE  from me!!!!

50,000 watts means I can listen to the Sports Animal here at home, two hours from Cincinnati.

Does this rekindle speculation that the Reds are leaving the Big One?

The Reds aren't going anywhere.

So, 980 the Sports Animal in Dayton might just have been rendered obsolete.

Any mention anywhere if this move has an effect on the Sports Animal affiliation with 980-WONE up here in Dayton?

Probably... all the simualcasting was done because of the weak signal.

Actually they are moving up the dial. ;) Also, the preachers have a time buy contract on 1530 for overnight. No "Sports Animal" around the clock.

I hope no live sports programs go past midnight, Eastern Time.

Clear Channels owns WLW and they other two stations.

Why? The Bengals are already on 50K watt WLW, right (and 92.5 and 104.7...)?

They should be very happy now. Once the Reds are done, they'll be on 2 50,000 Watt stations and the Fox (locally)

This is good news for Bengals fans, too, outside of the city. I love listening to Alan Cutler do the post game show and call in show, but until Reds season is over you can't hear it....but now with this move we can.

When does this move take effect?

Only a CC employee would enjoy that, since more and more people see CC as radio Satan.:D

I can't wait till the day when the FCC gains its senses and clears the entire CC mess up...of course I don't look for that to ever happen but as a former broadcaster I hate the era of corporate owned radio stations...too few voices in the market makes everything sound exactly the way it sounds right now.

I wouldn't want to be broadcasting the angry dorks over 50,000 watts. Our city struggles with it's image as it is. Surely, somebody else is available for that slot in the morning.

I'm glad Homer is moving to a stronger station.

I enjoy listening to sports radio at work, now on nights the Reds don't play we wont have to listen to that thing they call Sportsralk on 700 wlw.

Clear Channel is the TGIF and Applebees of radio, regurgitated, homogonized vanilla flavored entertainment.

In all honesty there are a lot of good people working for Clear Channel and Clear Channel is no worse than Cox, CBS, Emmis, Saga, Radio One..etc, etc...Are they boring...you bet.

A few years back (like 10 years) there was a rumor going around that Jacor (CC) was looking to buy the Reds...I think that would have been interesting.

It's a conspiracy

http://www.airamerica.com/springer/node/8187Well, I wasn't too happy with the snide remarks... it was uncalled for IMHO. I like listening to the station for a different viewpoint. The poster is pretty much right... I don't believe that here in Cincinnati they wanted Air America to thrive - but they also didn't want the oldies stations to thrive as well - BECAUSE of the wattage.

Matt,

I heard a bunch of Air America fans were ticked today as SportsTalk was on both channels. Why was that? Why the need to put the same programming on two channels?

We're in mid-switch. Since Homer has had better ratings overall, they get the simulcast.

At midnight, the switch will be complete and Sports will be only on 1530 and Air America on 1360.

Is it too tricky to switch both at the same time? I don't know.

Here's the official reason..

It is common in radio, when moving programming from one signal to another to broadcast programming on both stations for a period of time to move over the audience. This is what we are doing today only. The progressive talk format will be heard beginning at midnight tonight on 1360AM
