View Full Version : Listening to Joe call the game

I don't know if anyone else was listening to the game on Thursday night, but I was ready to stab myself in the eye with a fork after Joe mispronounced Jorge Piedra's name for the 8th time. He finally got "Piedra" right, and then pronounced his first name "George" twice. He's getting old.... and it's sad.

I can put up with some of the stuff, but I prefer to be able to understand the announcer, as thats the only way I get the game. Joe was good, and I loved what he and Marty had going, but Steve Stewart is just as good, and speaks much more clearly.

I heard the announcers last night on the Rockies broadcast call him "George". So maybe that is how you say it.

After the game when he interviewed Harang he mentioned about how Branson has had an influence on the pitching staff. I am thinking, "Branson, Jeff Branson, Branson, Missouri, what?" Of course he meant Bronson!
This is why we love him.

Steve Stewart is very good. Listening to other teams broadcasts, we are lucky to have him. (Nice call by him on the win tonight!)

Joe has been mispronouncing names since before many of us have been alive.
But, so what - he is Joe. He is an icon. For many years, he has been and always will be the Reds.

I have listened to the reds on the internet the last three nights, and I have to say that I really enjoyed Joe. I can put up with him not pronouncing a name right. He has been around the game along time and that type of experience is hard to come by. I also love the way he roots for the reds. I get a feeling he wants the reds to win more than most fans.

Steve was better tonight than usual, but he also blew some things. On Adam Dunn's long drive, he made everyone listening feel it was gone when it wasn't--something Joe and Marty have been criticized for on this board. In fact, I didn't see much different from Marty's broadcasts in one way--the incessant stuff going on other than baseball. Marty is much criticized for smoozing and Steve smoozed with Doc Hollywood. Marty is criticized for not paying atttention to the game. Twice tonight Steve tried to interrupt Joe's PBP with silly stuff--to his credit, joe kept on doing PBP.

If you don't like Marty or Joe, fine. Just say that. I finally figured out what annoys me so much about Steve tonight. His voice. It grates on my nerves and that, my friends, is my problem.

On Hatteberg's double, i knew something big was happening because I could hear Joe in the background saying "GO BALL, GET OUT" or something to that effect, while Steve, who was doing PBP, was silent for a couple seconds.

Steve is the worst broadcaster ive ever heard. His voice just eats at me and I easily lose track of whats going on while listening to him. Marty is god! He fills in between pitches very well except for when Steve interuppts with a stupid ass joke. If you turn on 700 and dont hear anything then you know Joe is annoucing. Although Joe can be boring for the most part, he sure does give you that hometown fan feel when something good happens.

He pronounced it "George" because that's how Jorge Piedra's first name is pronounced. Despite all the kicking he's gotten lately, I've enjoyed hearing Joe lately, and he's always been my favorite broadcaster. He will flub names now and again, sure, but I've been glad to hear him get to call some wins lately. And he's sounded surprisingly strong too. Welcome back, Joe!

I still think Steve's problem is that he's not very good with excitement. When something exciting happens, he sounds fake.

Marty, for all his issues these days, is the king of the world in that department, so maybe that's part of it.

Marty, for all his issues these days, is the king of the world in that department, so maybe that's part of it.

And in radio, that's the ticket. There are no pictures, you have to create pictures. All you have is sound and most of it is your voice, but the crowd plays a part. Too many times, Steve is low key when the crowd is really noisy, meaning something is happening. That's not good.

One of my favorite moments was the 45 minutes I spent a few years ago with Ken Squeir. Squeir was the guy who led NASCAR into national radio and TV with his work on CBS and NASCAR's Motor Racing Network (MRN). His observation was that in radio you could report the facts of the event, but you also had to be into the event yourself so that the emotion of the moment had to be conveyed to the audience. If your voice showed boredom, like in reading off statistics or a biography of the player, or in Ken's case the driver, the fans--the fans who were into the event--could tell you weren't really there. You were just doing your job.

I get the feeling in listening to Steve that he's there to do his job. He enjoys making funnies with Marty, but his mind is not on the game. Sure, he can tell you what's going on, but he is emotionally detached from what is going on. It's just the facts, mam--like Joe Friday,as someone put it recently.

Joe cries and gets disgusted. Marty wails and gets testy. Steve just gives us the facts. It's boring. Probably just as bored as Steve is.

I like Joe's enthusiasm as much as the next guy, but those long silent pauses kill me, especially when I'm listening at work because our radio there is old and gets horrible reception which means there's static over the radio the whole time. When all you hear is static and silence, people start asking you to change the station and I have to beat them away with sticks.

Am I one of the few people who enjoy's Steve's voice?

Am I one of the few people who enjoy's Steve's voice?Boy talk about :deadhorse ;) IIRC, trying to listen to Tracy on Extra Innings (talk about torture) some caller brought up that the "problem" with Steve is that he replaced Joe. Of course, I cussed a blue streak in the car! No, folks, STEVE IS A PBP GUY... JOE IS A COLOR GUY (who happens to do pbp, sometimes not so good). IMHO, Steve, if he wants to stay, and in all honesty I personally wouldn't considering how he's been jacked around... will replace Marty. That's what he is doing this series. I think him and Joe sound great together. I love Steve when I'm in my car when I have no other means of knowing what is going on in the game. I WANT the score, I WANT the INNING, I WANT to hit the lottery, I WANT Arroyo back in my fantasies, etc. IIRC, I wasn't all whole hog sausage about Marty when he replaced Al as the pbp guy. But obviously, he grew on me. Another note about Marty (and Joe as well)... not only were we as fans spoiled, but they as announcers were as well. I can't image going to work everyday and be "sunshine" in doing the pbp with a team that has been as miserable as the Reds have been these last 5 seasons.

IF Steve HAS a problem is that he is in the booth with the HOFer Marty and is trying to establish his own presence and style in calling the game. He'll get better. His call of Denorfia's GW "hit" last night (I was there and had the radio on) was GREAT! His voice was full of emotion and I could hear it over the roar of the crowd.

So to answer your question, Dunner, yes I :luvu: Steve's voice! I also :luvu: Marty and my hometown guy, Joe.

Steve's game winning call was better last night, it sounded like he had more emotion, but it's still nothing compared to Marty or Joe. I just can't get with his style or his voice. I'll even avoid listening to the 3,4 and 7th innings at times.

I'm not a Steve fan (feel pretty indifferent about him actually) but he's not worse than Joe. Joe may be beloved in Cincinnati, but as a broadcaster, he's just not good. I dread the innings where he's working alone because it just seems he easily gets confused and it's hard to follow what's going on.

like Maldez posted earlier...
"Hatchebird hits one down the third base line...and it's a fair ball!!!....no wait...or is it.....Adam still at 2nd............................................... ........well, two away and here's Branson Phillips to the plate......"

And the guy rarely says the score or gives you a good description of what's going on. He'll just tell you what's going on with the current hitter.

I know he's an old guy and all, but he's the one who's complained about getting pushed out. IMO, he got pushed out for a good reason. He just wasn't any good anymore (if he was good at all before).

This is one of my favorite subjects, since I am a big baseball, radio and WLW fan...first, Marty and Joe are icons in Cincinnati...whatever they do (and rightfully so) pretty much is unquestioned...they have deserved this right...I am a huge Marty apologist, but have realized recently that there are many Reds fans who dont care for the poofy haired fancy boy...Joe, yes does not do a great job on pbp and has a tendency to screw up latin names...but I feel he actually has sounded pretty strong during the Rockies series...I have no problem with Joe doing limited games until he decides to no longer participate...once again, I feel he has earned that...Joe and Steve have been a nice alternative to Marty.

Now, getting to Marty and Steve...as I have stated on a previous thread, Reds Radio has pretty much become "The Marty Brenneman Show with "Bad Boy" Steve Stewart"...the game has become to an extent a secondary element to the stories, e-mails, and trivia questions....and apparently many fans (including myself) enjoy it...lets face it, Reds Radio Broadcasts are highly rated and are enjoyed by a loyal fan base

Steve, while being bland, does a good job of the nuts and bolts, and is a good sidekick to the Marty show...and yes, Marty had a lot of say in the choosing of Steve Stewart....I have heard on the "Hot Stove League" how Marty listened to tapes and consulted in the hiring..

It's good to hear Joe again. The last time he announced a few games was before his illness, and to me, he didn't sound well at all. He sounded sick, and it was depressing. But this time I think he sounds much better. If the Reds can stay in this race, I hope Joe gets to call some games down the stretch. He sure as hell deserves it.

At one point, Hatteburg was 1-2 in the count, suddenly he's 3-2, and Steve is still jabbing, then there's a roar in the background, and a minute later we learn what happened. Why does anybody care about Joe mispronouncing names and providing a less-than stellar broadcast? He's an icon and, more than any other former player I can think of, loves the Reds. Just like me.

All I need is a fairly accurate account of what is happening in the ballgame from a broadcaster. Occasionally, I need to hear the score. I don't need his statistical analysis, or inside stories about the golf tournament he played in yesterday. I know enough about the game to understand who Joe is talking about when he screws up a name, and if I didn't I would be none the wiser anyway.

Joe has been through WW2, Korea, Vietnam, the Iranian Hostage crisis, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, Watergate, Operation Desert Storm, Jimmy Carter, the rise and fall of Rush Limbaugh, GI Joe and Cabbage Patch Kids, Pete Rose's first game, Pete Rose's last game, 911 and 2 George Bushes as either a fan, player or employee of my beloved Cincinnati Reds. In my book, he is a great figure in the history of this great team and he can broadcast Reds games in the same imperfect way he has for the last 40 years until the day he dies.

I always thought it was pronounced *****-hay, but it's not.

I'm living/working in Colorado this summer, and have watched most of the Rockies games on TV. Their announcers call him "George" too. I also saw him play in Colorado Springs before he was called up. The public address announcer called him "George" before each at bat.

I see that the guy was born in California, and presumably grew up in the US. Thus, it's understandable that he might have taken to the anglicized version of the name. (Kind of reminds me of "Jesus Shuttlesworth" in that awful Spike Lee movie).

That's a good point and could be the case. There are other Jorge/Georges out there too, I know someone personally who falls in that category, but he is from Brazil. So many people that see his name as "Jorge" will call him "hore-hay" but it's "George" and he HATES getting hore-hayed. The best I remember, and I could be mistaken, is in Brazil at least, they don't go with the "hore-hay" because it's something to distinguish Portuguese from Spanish. Or maybe that's just him, I dunno!

The last time he was on the air, before he got sick, I turned off the TV and grabbed the radio and some beer and headed to the backyard. I'm not real far from fifty, and hearing Joe on the radio kind of makes me feel closer to the past, kind of like an old song can do. And I know he messes up some things, but can you truly say you can't follow the game when he does PBP?

Remember the old style car radios with the dial? Where I am from WLW wasn't always really clear and it took a moment or two to find it on the dial. I would get the vertical bar right around 700 (or 7, on the car radio) and if i didn't hear anything I always figured Joe must be doing PBP!

My only problem with Steve Stewart is that he's not a TRUE Reds fan.

PUUUUUUUUULLLLLEEEEEEEZ!

Was Marty a "true reds fan" when he was hired?

Is George Grande?

C'mon...you're reaching.

Would Joe be a "true reds fan" if he wasn't signed by the team and played in his first pro game when he was 15?

I am a true reds fan...have been all my life but when I moved to Tampa several years ago I also started to root for the D-Rays...I moved there for a job so does that mean that my interest in the D-Rays is not "true"?

Get a grip...Stewart is doing an outstanding job...remember when they had the demo's of the other announcers they were conidering on the net? tewrat was far and away the best candidate.

I'd love to hear Paul Kiels (voice of the Buckeyes) n the booth with Steve or Marty....will Steve be here longterm?

The old radio I have on my back porch has a dial tuner and Joe "tricked" me into thinking that WLW was off the air during the 4th inning of Saturday's game.

Cincy Chili, I've got to disagree with ya, I thought 'He Got Game' was a pretty cool movie. Esp. when Jesus 'hangs out' with the two coeds on his college visit.

And I'm one who thinks the pinnacle of Spike Lee's creative genius was his participation in the Michael Jordan shoe campaign.

Boy talk about :deadhorse ;) IIRC, trying to listen to Tracy on Extra Innings (talk about torture) some caller brought up that the "problem" with Steve is that he replaced Joe.

Wait a second. They were actually talking about baseball on that show? All it seems to be nowdays is the Tracy Jones Show. All he needs is a syncophantic sidekick. Is William B. Williams available?

Steve > Joe > Marty

No, sorry. Steve's fine and all, but he's just very vanilla as far as I'm concerned. He calls a good game, but there's nothing particularly interesting about his style.

Dunn's game winning grand slam a few weeks ago wouldn't have been nearly as exciting without Marty's call. I know that Marty's stump speeches and stubborn posturing gets on people's nerves, but I'll still take his calls over Steve's. Steve is just "ok".

On Andy Furman's Extra Innings show last night, there was some mention about Marty taking some more time off in August. I am not sure if they were kidding or not.

I would hope he is not. A little objectiveness is not a bad thing.
