From Rotoworld per Cincinnati Post:

Brandon Claussen (shoulder) was scratched from his scheduled rehab start at Triple-A Louisville on Monday night because of a sore back.

Clasusen had his previous outing rained out. The current problem isn't supposed to be serious, but it might prevent him from making it back before the end of the month. Joe Mays will stay in the rotation until Claussen gets back.

Good God.

There is a better option right?

At least it's an indication Mays is out of the rotation when he comes back.

Why not bring up Chris Michalak?

8-4 2.61 ERA

35 year old career minor league lefty w/ 47K in 110 IP? Reds are probably better off with Joe Mays.

ETA: Well, I'm selling his 150 career big league innings short by calling him a career minor leaguer, but still -- not the kinda guy that screams "Savior."

ETA pt. 2: He's a lefty, it turns out.

Why not have the relievers pitch? Weather goes the first 2, Mercker the next 2, Standridge the next 2, Bray the 7th, Majic the 8th, Coffey/EE the 9th.

It's a one shot deal and you can also bring up someone from Louisville to take Mays'es roster spot.

I've wondered why that hasn't been done at times.

Of course the bullpen has been so terrible that it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Like I said last week, I've seen zero evidence that Mays will be out of the rotation anytime soon.

The Reds used to do that a few years back -- give their swingman/long reliever a "spot start" of 4-5 innings then have the bullpen take the rest. John Reidling used to be the guy they called on, but Jose Rijo came out of the pen to take spot starts, as did Todd Van Poppel, IIRC.

Anybody but Joe Mays, it's like getting a root canal with no pain killers watching him pitch. I'd rather see Krono on the hill.

What if Mays is Krono?

If that's true then I'm sending Krono a bill for the Nitro I'm gonna have to take since his pitching is ruining my 27 year old ticker. ;)

If Krono made his National League debut at GABP, I'm buying the first round in the first inning to everyone.

Those double-knit white pants with the red pinstripes wouldn't not look good with brown stains :D

Krono's solid - knows how to win and all. Oh yeah, He Also Plays The Game The Right Way.

I would rather see the Reds cut Mays and give LHP Mike Gosling a shot at the fifth spot. He can't do any worse than Mays.

I agree, but would prefer Dumatrait. If not him Gosling or Germano couldn't be any worse than Mays.

Another idea would be trading Jason LaRue to the Royals for LHP Mark Redman. That's assuming when David Ross is healthy and off the DL.

Although Redman's not bad - I'd just as soon see Claussen in there.

Assuming Claussen won't be ready for another couple weeks, I'd much, much rather see Germano get a couple of starts then to ever see Joe Mays in the rotation. Give him a shot.

Heck we might actually even win one or both of those games.

It's Tony LaRussa all over again!

Back in his Oakland days he ran a 4 man rotation, and on the 5th day he wanted at minimum 3 bullpen guys to go 3 innings a piece.

I don't miss that gem of managerial wisdom, but I bet the rest of the AL West sure does.
