Those are called avatars. You have to have posting privileges in the Old Red Guard to be able to include one in your posts. Here's a quote from our FAQ thread. I think the answer you found was from the FAQ provided by the software company, vBulletin.

Q: How can I get one of those pictures under my user name when I post?
To get one of those pictures (called an avatar), you must have posting privileges at The Old Red Guard.

Thanks Macro....I think. I know/knew they were called avatars, but at the risk of sounding ignorant, which I have made a life of doing, I still don't know how to get one. Here anyway. Who is the Red guard? The mob? lol Do :help: they reside behind a big curtain? Sorry,I don't get it,but thanks.

Wow, I just learned a little bout all the red tape(no pun intended) with the guard etc. Heavy. Can live without a pic I guess.

You know, I think it's about time I chose an avatar.

How do I go about doing that?

Click on the "User CP" link at the top of any page and a link for editing your avatar will appear on the left side of that page.

GR - you can also make one yourself. Say of a particular sports moment you want to remember. Just take an image, like so

or

Resize it to 100x100 and you're good to go.

Or, maybe an old friend you miss terribly and have never replaced in your life:
