Kansas City, Mo. // The Orioles could have a tough decision on their hands in the coming weeks regarding the future of Jeff Conine , who signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal in December with an option for a second season.
The option vests if Conine reaches 450 plate appearances and the 40-year-old is on pace to eclipse that mark with 320 plate appearances with 61 games remaining. Conine would earn $2 million next season if the option vests, a high price for a player who will turn 41 next June and is obviously not in the club's long-term plans.

Still, Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said that the option has no bearing on his decisions and he'll continue to play Conine, who has been one of his team's hottest hitters over the past month, raising his average 34 points since June 22.

"I've been told not to let any of that stuff enter in my decision, so it won't," Perlozzo said. "I am out here to put the best team out on the field to win. I don't think that [other stuff] matters."

There's still a decent chance that the Orioles could trade Conine before Monday's non-waiver deadline, making his contract a non-issue. The St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners are among the teams that are interested in Conine, who would likely bring a mid-level prospect in return. full article (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp.osnotes26jul26,0,1966371.story?coll=bal-sports-baseball)

Why?
That's my thought...why? Unless they're seriously considering dealing Hatte to the Halos (see other threads) and then fill the 1B gap with Conine.

I'm IN! Oh wait...another vet to take the spot of EdE. I'm sure JN would love to have him at 3rd.

once they fix the pitching and have more roster slots, Reds will need a righty pinch-hitter. Even if they don't fix pitching, they need a righty bat if Larue is dealt.

need a lefty bat, too. I wonder if it'll be Votto. That'd make a lot of first basemen and catchers

I'm guessing they want RH 1b to platoon with the Hat freeing up Aurilia for full time 3b duties.

What does Conine do for us?
Some of Jeff Conine's '06 stats to date:

AB 2B 3B HR RBI AVG SLG OBP
289 16 3 7 36 .260 .408 .323

But the Reds already have that and then some from the left side of the plate in the person of Hatteberg.

Who would be would be DFA after Conine's acquisition?? I fear that EE would be designated for the bench.

No thanks!

When the Reds trade Rich to LA for Izturis they will need a RH platoon for 1st.

I'm not at all kidding when I say that I thought Jeff Conine retired after last season.

Is that the equivalent of going to Baltimore?

Conine will be available after the deadline, but might not clear enough teams to enable the Reds to make a claim

I don't have a problem with snagging Conine for the stretch run ... though I'd rather have Cody Ross.

Agree. I think the Reds need another lefthanded bat to come off the bench.

That would sure be nice. Though the Reds aren't there yet, the club is starting to move toward the RHB tilt that dominated the franchise for much of the 1990s.

Jeff Conine and Cody Ross both bat righthanded.

I thought about this too after seeing him hit HR's last night. But his numbers are actually pretty bad. Yes, he might have a future, but as far as this season goes, I think I'd rather have Conine

Ross is .265/.323/.547 on the season. That's better than Conine's giving this year. Add in the defense and a decent set of wheels and you've got yourself a nice, multi-faceted bench player.

Mind you, I'd be all for having Ross and Conine for a stretch run. That would make for a deep bench.

Or maybe go a cheaper route and work out a deal for recently DFA Carl Everett.

Couple this rumor with the Reggie rumor and you can begin to smell some truthiness.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting the Reds continue to be potential suitors for Jeff Conine, this is from today's paper:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp.ostrade29jul29,0,5842178.story?coll=bal-sports-baseball

The front office also had discussions with various teams yesterday about first baseman Jeff Conine , starter Rodrigo Lopez and reliever LaTroy Hawkins . Hawkins and Conine are both free agents; Lopez has one year left in arbitration. There continues to be no interest in catcher Javy Lopez , who also is a free agent.

The St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds have been rumored to be potential suitors for Conine, and another possible fit are the New York Yankees, who reportedly are looking for a right-handed first baseman.

No deals are imminent, but the source added that the front office is still hopeful it can find matches by 4 p.m. Monday.

I could see Cleveland OF Todd Hollandsworth in a Reds uniform as a replacement for DeWayne Wise....who was designated for assignment.

Please tell me we don't acquire this dinosaur.

I think Denorfia proved last night that he can get the job done, as a starter or off the bench.

Much as I would like to see Hollandsworth as a Red (I work with his younger brother), I hope any moves at the deadline will address the back of the rotation and middle relief before worrying about adding another bench player.

Unless they dump a catch they don't have room for another OF
