C David Ross today was returned from his rehabilitation assignment and was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list. Since July 16 he had been on the DL with a lower abdominal strain.

Ross will fill the roster spot vacated by RHP Joe Mays, who has been designated for assignment.

What's Claussen's current status?

I believe he's scheduled to throw his 2nd rehab start this weekend, or right around there.

I know I've heard it reported that there's no way Claussen can make Saturday's start for the Reds. Forget where I got that, though.

I bet you they take Gosling, who is also the weakest of the three choices. Although with Mike's pattern of "three or four good innings then drop off quick" so familiar from all these Eric Milton starts, it should seem strangely familiar.

Gosling doesn't have what it takes to be a starter in the major leagues. I'd like to see him converted to the bullpen ASAP.

Mark Redman pitched yesterday. I doubt he'd make Saturday's scheduled start after throwing 123 pitches yesterday. Maybe they bump the rest of the rotation up a day and then slot Redman (or whoever is acquired) in.

It's not that they're dumping that many more than usual, it's just teams used to send players outright to AAA or released them, now they use the DFA on the off chance that maybe they could swing a trade within the following 10 days.

I believe he was DFA'd and then traded within the 10 days....

Anyway, I guess you could look at all 8 of those guys and say that they were all bad moves (some holdovers from DanO, some by Krivsky). Funny thing is, we're so happy that they were shipped out that we celebrate the fact that they were released and consider them good moves when they are cut. Under O'Brien, I doubt you would have seen that many moves with those guys. I'm pretty certain that 3/4 of those guys would still be on the roster under O'Brien. Nice to know that Krivsky is serious about improving the team and willing to admit a bad fit on the team, even if it was his own move. :beerme:

The combined 2006 batting and pitching runs above replacement level for those guys is -35 runs. That's not -35 runs above average; that's -35 runs above replacement level. That's staggering when also considering that maybe with the exception of White and Hammond, nobody has been anything close to resembling a guy with regular playing time.

Get together a full roster of players such as the above, and I'm not sure that team could manage to win even 15-20 games in a full season. They could win that many ... maybe, but I don't think I'd bet on it. FWIW, a team of all players right at replacement value would win in the neighborhood of 35-40 games over a full season.

And to think everyone except Kata has received playing time for the 2006 Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals have even been crazy enough to give Perez 27 plate appearances, all of them in June, I think. His batting runs above replacement player in those 27 plate appearances sits at 0. Better them than us.
