Why don't the Reds ever wear their all red hats?

I've been wondering that since these uniforms came out in 1999. Since they're apparently changing the uniforms for next year, it looks like that cap will have never been worn on the field. Makes you wonder why they even listed it as a game cap. I think I've read somewhere that they were used for a game or two, but I didn't see it nor have I seen a photo.

Don't know. The last time I remember them wearing the all red hats was Easter of 2000.

Don't ask me how I remember that, I just do.

They've worn it a few times, but not for a long time. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that we will be seeing a lot of all red caps with the new uniforms.

SUMMER OF '69: Richard Nixon was in the first year of his presidency. Neil Armstrong had walked on the moon. And the Amazin' Mets were roaring toward a world title.

That's the era Mets management wanted to recall Tuesday night with its “Turn Back the Clock” promotion, which included both teams wearing replicas of their 1969 uniforms. Cincinnati was decked in fake gray flannel and all-red caps, while the Mets wore pinstripe outfits.

Yep, those look like the wool blend used in the late 60's. Probably the best looking material ever used for uniforms

Griffey looks like he's wearing pajamas.

If we go to a more old-school look--which I'm betting is what Castellini has in mind--something has GOT to be done about the sock issue.

Those uniforms were not that baggy in 1969.

Oh, I just think ballplayers ought to look like ballplayers. High socks mandatory. Probably impossible in this day and age, however.

It's one of my quirks, but I like the baggy pants. The stirrups made as much sense as wearing a necktie. The tall one-piece one-color stocks aren't so bad, though.

As for the socks, I love the high pants legs and socks showing, but when Reds players show their red socks with the black sleeves on the road, it looks hideous! I hope Game 2 of the 2006 World Series is the very last time we see the black sleeves, black helmets, or black caps on Reds players.

Didn't they have one in the early 90's when the away uniforms were gray with red pinstripes?

I actually have an all red Bret Boone cap with his number on it.

Yep - for most of the mid 90's.

I'm tired of the vests. I bet it hurts merchandise sells too. I mean anyone can wear a jersey around in public and be cool, but when you have to buy a vest style jersey....ehh.

My thoughts exactly. Along with the black, I hope the vests are gone after this year, as well. I know we have a history with them, but uniforms run in cycles, and I think the "vest cycle" is about to run its course. Just a hunch and nothing more.

Those (1990s-era) white pinstripe hats were as hideous as anything in Reds fashion history. You could never find one in the stores where the pinstripes actually lined up nicely. They were machine-made and ugly.

^^I agree about the pinstriped hats. I played for a summer league team for two summers that had basically the same hats.

I do, however, like the current vest style jerseys more than the sleeved jerseys. I'm not sure why, they just look a little nicer to me. I also like the grey and black for the road jerseys.

I actually liked the grey pinstriped away uniforms of the 90's, as well. Looked good with the red cap. There was always something that bugged me about those uniforms, though. The number was on the wrong side of the uniform. It should always be on the left side under the team name. The only exception to this should be when a team uses a left chest logo, such as the ever popular C-Reds logo. I think the Reds may be the only team that has ever done this in the history of the game. I know the Cubs centered their numbers on the front of the uniform in 1972, with their switch to the "pullover" style. That lasted only one season. The Astros put their numbers on the right leg of the infamous "rainbow" uniforms until 1980 when the number disappeared.

Great uniform, but it still bugs me about the number every time I see it.

Deion also altered (shortened) the sleeves on his uniform to acknowledge the style of Jackie Robinson. The MLB uniform police told Deion he could not do it, so the Reds altered all the uniform sleeves for one season to stay withing the MLB team compliance guidelines. Funny how they mandate sleeves, but let them wear their pants any way they want. The pants issue was supposed to be cracked down on a couple of years back, but nothing ever became of it.

Thanks, Kitty. Most of the kids just wear the colored socks, or pull their pants down to their shoes. Matt likes the stirrups and so do I. Kind of a good luck thing with him.
