Southern league awards...Votto gets best hitting prospect and best defensive 1st baseman. Perez gets best defensive catcher.

Votto turned a real rare daily double there. Very impressive. I didn't know he was that good with the mitt.

if memory serves, Votto was considered a butcher there two years ago. of course, i think he was a catcher up until then...

That's a shock, everything we've heard before is that Votto's glove is what's holding him back.

That's good to know. Of course, it may be a "best of the mediocre" award. At the Double-A level, plenty of future first basemen are still trying to play some other position.

Ed Taubensee got a "best defensive catcher" award in the minors, too.

As in Gold Glove voting, "best defender" sometimes means "he hit some long HRs against us"

Will Votto get a shot at the starting job in Spring Training next year?
Or will that go automatically to Hatteburg?

Or will that go automatically to Hatteburg?we all know the answer to that unless Hatty has a meltdown (which he did in August and September last year)

Votto is headed to Louisville next year regardless of what he does in the spring. If he rakes in Louisville and Hat is struggling come June/July, Joey will get a shot.

It was documented that Votto worked very hard on his defense, even the day of the Futures Game.

Is Aurillia signed for next year? If not, you gotta let him go and bring up Votto to create at least a platoon-type situation with the Hat at 1B. Unless of course the Hat continues producing at these levels, which seems unlikely.

If RA is not signed, it will be interesting to see if Wayne offers him arb in an attempt to squeeze a draft pick out of the situation. What type of draft pick would he qualify for with the year he is having?

Hat and Votto are both left-handed hitters.

If Votto gets the reputation for defensive excellence then he stands a lot better chance with Kriv and Narron of seeing the field.

Is stats like these which show the value, when used correctly, of players like RA and Eduardo Perez (who I was dying for the Reds to acquire this offseason).
