CINCINNATI -- Seeking an explanation for why Reds pitcher Elizardo Ramirez was roughed up so badly against the Cardinals on Monday, Reds pitching coach Tom Hume and bullpen coach Lee Tunnell decided to analyze videotape.
In Monday's 13-1 loss, St. Louis hitters appeared to be sitting on nearly all of Ramirez's pitches. The righty allowed seven runs -- six earned -- over 1 2/3 innings. It was a 5-0 game after just 12 pitches were thrown.

In a bullpen session a couple of weeks ago, Hume noticed Ramirez had tipped some of his pitches -- and showed a different look when throwing fastballs and changeups. Did the Cardinals know what might be coming?

Reds manager Jerry Narron didn't think that was the issue.

"He was not locating where he wanted to, for whatever reason," Narron said. "[Hume and Tunnell] spent a lot of time looking to see if he was doing anything last night that gave away pitches.

"They kept seeing the same thing all of us saw last night. The pitches were right there to hit."

In his last seven starts, Ramirez had allowed 30 earned runs over 35 innings (7.46 ERA). He is 4-8 with a 4.93 ERA in 19 games, including 18 starts, this season.

Although the Reds acquired a former starter in Ryan Franklin from the Phillies on Monday, there were no plans to take Ramirez, 23, out of the rotation for now. He is still scheduled to start on Saturday at Philadelphia.

"He's a couple starts away from striking out seven straight guys [at Houston on July 27]," Narron said. "It's all about location."

Good to see that they are sticking with Ramirez. Last thing I'd like to see is Franklin replace Ramirez.

I think I'd rather see good ol' Dave than Joe Mays.

"They kept seeing the same thing all of us saw last night. The pitches were right there to hit."

Now - here's Hal McCoy's take.

"But all they saw was what we all saw he was throwing the ball right into the wampum zone, is what I think," Narron said.

Now, I'm familiar with baseball terms, but what is the wampum zone? I thought that would only be in Cleveland.

Interesting how Narron can say the same thing twice. That's more interesting. Maybe Lancaster can break the tie.
