One of the players in the clubhouse just saw this on the news.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was already being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

The girl was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996.

Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, officials in Washington said. They asked to remain anonymous pending an announcement in Colorado.

The girl's parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, had been under an "umbrella of suspicion" in JonBenet's death. The Ramseys said an intruder killed their daughter. A grand jury investigation in Boulder ended with no indictments, and no arrests had been made in the case.

Patsy Ramsey died in July.

In 2003, U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge's decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, who the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter's murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with Carnes' declaration.

Has O.J. found the real killer too?

Being serious for a second. The police and other officials apparently did a poor job at the start. It seems they were in over their heads and they should of called in for help a lot sooner.

Wow, if they found a killer and it had nothing to do with the Remsey's, that would be unbelievable.

If it turns out like that, what a tremendous injustice to the family being accused all those years.

This will be tough on John Ramsey, but yet if this man is guilty it will also be a great day for him. It's going to bring a lot of tough memories for him.

They always had the killer's DNA, but unfortunately never had a sample from which to match it with. With this suspect, it sounds like they must have already done their due dilligence in this arena prior to allowing this leak to happen.

Congrats to the authorities for never allowing this case to go cold. May God bless the poor tortured sole of Patsy Ramsey.

If it turns out like that, what a tremendous injustice to the family being accused all those years. It's actually been the consensus by most law officials for the last few years that none of the Ramseys were involved in her murder. Basically, the grand jury was never unable to indict the family because they could not find a match for the DNA that was left by the killer.

Back on topic; they did say Patsy Ramsey was told, before she died, they were closing in on an arrest. At least she knew that before she passed.

Having a bias towards pretty blondes is neither political nor religious.

I did not violate any board rules, so do not call me out on here.

If you are going to single me out for not being on topic, then you owe each of us an admonishment.

You mods are great. If we have problems you want us to to take it private, if you have problems you issue a proclamation.

If the DNA matches, this is a moot point, but there are still some very weird things about this story. I've heard theories that this guy is just trying to get extradited from Thailand (where he's serving serious jail time), and that once he's back in the USA, he'll recant and take his chances in the courtroom.

It's starting to sound like a hoax to me. They said he told people he drugged her, yet in the autopsy they found no evidence of that at all. He's made other statements that don't fit the crime scene either.

Something about this whole thing doesn't add up.

Boulder, CO newspaper can be found at www.dailycamera.com. Extensive coverage available there obviously.

Also, the death penalty will be a non-issue in Colorado. Their version of the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in 2003 SCOTUS Ring v. Arizona decision. Sounds like we might have a mental instability issue to deal with also.

I'm not reading anything that says he was arrested for sex offenses in Thailand.

I don't think that is even close to being as bad - and by bad I mean TV networks obsessed over the case to the ad nauseum point - as the Peterson case. I suppose perhaps since theRamsey case has been open that is why it has been that bad.

I too think the guy is lying, from what very little information we have. It just doesn't add up. One article I read stated that he confessed to picking her up after school and bringing her to her house, intending to kidnap her for ransom when things "went wrong". while I've never kidnapped anyone, even my limited experience would lead me to believe that a kidnappee's house is, oh, pretty much the last place on earth you'd want to take her after kidnapping. Secondly, she died on December 25, ie. the one day of the year there's not a kid in America in school anywhere.

Most of these high-profile tabloid cases, from OJ to the Aruban girl, go right over my head. But I admit I've always had an interest in this one, not, I think, because of the beauty pageant thing, but because of the law and justice side of it. It just seemed like the whole investigation got totally botched by both the police and the DA or somewhere in between...I also suspect the family, even if they were not involved in the murder, did hamper the investigation somehow.

Because of all the mistakes and the age of the case at this point, I suspect it may never be solved. And I do find that kind of interesting.

As cynical as I am, I really really hoped that this suspect was the guy. Maybe he still is.

Kudos to the family for preaching "innocent until proven guilty" particularly since they were evidently victimized by those who didn't practice this.

Given the ineptitude in this investigation, I won't believe the guy until I hear that DNA confirms it.

As some of you know, I was living in Boulder when this went down (no, I didn't do it!). As great as Boulder is, the police department struck me as horribly inept. This wasn't the only unsolved murder. There was a very high percentage of them. Unsolved rapes too.

Personally, on a much less important scale, I had my house burglarized, but was subsequently able to finger the guy who did it (through a person to whom he tried to hawk some of my stuff). The police and the DA never brought charges against him.

They already did... he did 6 months on it. Cali. wants him for a failure to appear in court. He'll also catch an escape charge for leaving the country. Not sure what he'll get in Cali., but in Ohio he'd get 2-5 years.

He'll also catch some charges in Colorado for lying to the police, but that will go away because of his insanity (I assume). Not sure what he'll get for the "Chess King" outfit. Nancy Grace sure will be a fun watch tonight, though.

More then fair. That DA in Colorado really screwed this thing up IMO and didn't do her homework as far as I'm concerned.

Did she even think of calling family members of this guy or checking DNA?

Shoddy, very shoddy. It's no wonder they bungled and screwed up the original investigation and crime scene.

And as far as I'm concerned, the media frenzy is doing exactly what this guy wants - giving him attention, his "15 minutes of fame".
