My old man recently bought a Sony SXRC widescreen. It says "hd tuner intergrated".
Now is that just for the local on air channels? Won't he still need a HD satellite reciever from Directv? Which is his carrier.
Yup. He'll still need to get an HD Receiver and subscribe to DirecTV's HD Channel package.

He would need either a tuner or a HD cable box or he can buy a antenna that will pick up local stations that are available in HD. On my TVs I use a Time Warner HD cable box that gives me the HD channels they carry. I also have a HD antenna hooked up which allows me to get one of the local Dayton stations that are not carried in HD on Time Warner.

The integrated tuner really only applies to over-the-air broadcasts. For cable or DTV/DIsh HD you need one of their HD recievers and all the proper cables. Skip Monster- you overpay for what you need. As for the antennae, therre is no true HD antennae- that is just marketing. You just eed a good standard antennae that picks up the signals, Some HD broadcasts ar in UHF and some are in VHF. Here are some good sights for information.
