Bout Time!

From Marc:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Reds have added right-hander Brad Salmon to the 40-man roster.

That gives them 39 guys on the roster, not including five still officially on the 60-day DL -- Claussen, Guardado, Mercker, Ramirez and Wilson.

I assume they didn't want him exposed to the Rule V draft?

Haven't heard much talk about Salmon, but he was really dominant in AAA. Looks like big walk & big K totals with 6 wild pitches. I haven't seen a scouting report. Can I assume he's a guy with lots of movement and tenuous command? What's the story? How's he project?

Just wondering if this guy is a sleeper? Pretty impressive stats but you never heard about him being one of the Reds top prospects.

from the look of his stats he's mostly a righty specialist (41 IP 1.76 ERA .158 AVG). His numbers facing lefties though small seem to be average (16.2 IP 3.78 ERA .246 AVG)

Over all if he could work on getting lefties out he might be a candidate for Closer. He'll fill the roll of the departed Mercker. He'll be 27 at the start of the season.

AA & AAA Stats:

7-2 2.44ERA 55G 5Saves 81IP 54H 25R 22ER 3HR 43BB 96K 1.04GO/AO .193 AVG.

Makes you wonder why a guy like this was never given a shot, when the bullpen was so ineffective, that it would necessitate a trade of a quarter of the offense.

It looks like Jason Johnson was also added to the 40 man roster. I wonder who will be the 40th player who will be on the roster.

If I remember correctly, George & Chris asked Wayne about Salmon at some point in the middle of the season and Wayne just said he just thought Brad was the kind of guy that would never had success up here and that he would rather call Burns back up

How stupid to place Jason Johnson on the 40-man roster. Don't we already have enough wasted rosters spots? Johnson, Castro, Franklin, Wilson, Perez, Clayton, Hollandsworth, and Watson are all complete wastes of a roster spot.

I do like to the move to add Salmon though.

Well, those spots are all left over from the season. You'll see Johnson, Hollandsworth, Clayton, etc. all come off once free agency hits so that some of the 60-day DL guys can be added back and another minor leaguer or two is added.

Johnson was never taken off the roster. One free agency starts, he is gone.

Marc gave a rundown of the 60 day DL guys in his blog piece abut Salmon going on the 40 man roster. Looks to me like the only 2 guys on the 60 day list who would figure to come back to the 40 man roster are Elizardo Ramirez and Brandon Claussen. Of the other guys, Eddie Guardado and Kent Mercker will be free agents; and the club holds a multimillion dollar option on Paul Wilson that they surely will buy out (for $850K I believe).

When the players can start filing for FA, I think there will all kinds of room for any of the younger guys they need to move ontop the 40 man to shield them from the Rule V draft.

Isn't Josh a F.A.?

I know Franklin, Wiilson, Clayton, and Holly are.
