PerMarc:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Reds have added right-hander Brad Salmon to the 40-man roster.

That gives them 39 guys on the roster, not including five still officially on the 60-day DL -- Claussen, Guardado, Mercker, Ramirez and Wilson

Anybody with info on this guy? age? velocity?

Probably protecting him for the Rule 5.

The walks concern me a bit, but those are some pretty impressive numbers overall, especially the strikeouts.

I'm pretty embarrassed I didn't know more about this guy during the season. How did he fly under the radar -- especially with this year's major league bullpen in such disarray?

Poor management. But hey, we got Ryan Franklin.

It looks like Jason Johnson was also added to the 40 man roster.

A WHIP at about 1.1. I really like that. The Ks are awesome. I'd be more excited with a higher GO/AO ratio but he seems to keep the ball in the ballpark. Seems like a guy we probably could have used with the big club this year.

I have a question that's really going to make me look dumb, but here goes...

Why add players to the 40-man roster at this time? I'm guessing there's some good reason, I just don't know what it is.

I would think you just leave everything as is until late in Spring Training.

I heard he's realy good swimming upstream. ;)

TB, the Rule 5 draft is coming up and whomever is not on the 40 man roster and has to be protected, could be drafted by another team. A guy like Homer wouldn't qualify since he doesn't need to be protected for another year or so but a guy like Joey Votto does.

To protect them from Rule V draft selection.

I'm glad to see that he is from the Atlantic side of the US instead of the Pacific. I would hate to see what would happen when he reached his destination if he was from the Pacific side.

Thanks guys... I knew there had to be a good reason.

But now let me take it one step further.... are you telling me that the Rule 5 draft allows ANY UNPROTECTED PLAYER not on the 40-man to be plucked at will off any minor league roster? If so, I'm apalled!

Oh, and one more... what's the definition of "unprotected"?

Is Votto on the 40-man?

Send it to the cornfield Wayne.

He was already on it, just like all of the other FA's to be. They will be gone soon enough.

from wiki....
Any player that has played professional baseball for more than 3 years (or more than 4 years if signed at the age of 18 or younger) is eligible for the draft, provided he is not on a team's 40-man roster.

No, only those not on the 40-man and not within 3 or 4 years of their signing (depending on age when signed--3 if signed at 19, 4 if at 18).

One further thing that should be added is that if a team does pick an eligible player in the Rule V Draft, that team has to keep that player on its 25 man roster for the entire next season. If they don't, they have to offer the player back to the original team for some meager amount of money. In other words, you cannot draft a player in the Rule V Draft and stash him in the minors. Since most teams do not want to waste a roster spot on a player that is not ready to play in the majors, there are not that many players selected.

Yeah, I think the record for most players selected was 24 in 1994. So not many go each year, usually just 3 or 4.

Why would we add players to the fourty-man roster now as opposed to the day before the draft?

Also, I have heard talk that the Reds are at risk of losing Javon Moran.

I don't know. The deadline is Nov. 20. Arbitration positioning, prep for a trade... IDK.

Shouldn't be. Moran is within 3 years of signing with the Reds.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what the rules are on this aspect of it, but he was traded to the Reds--not signed by the Reds. Anyway, the Phillies signed him on June 24, 2003, and it's been slightly over three years since then.

Moran was with the Phillies organization in 2003. He's Rule 5 eligible if the Reds don't put him on the 40-man.

Ah, the Rule V draft. Such success the Reds have had there. Where would they have been without the services of Adrian Burnside, for instance?
