I've always been a big fan of the guy, but I can't watch TV for 5 minutes without seeing at least one commercial with the guy. Enough is enough. There is such thing as over-exposure and Peyton has officially arrived at that point.

I have no idea who this is. I mean, I've heard the name, and I know he plays for the Colts or the Patriots, but I wouldn't know what he looked like if he if he hit me with a stick that said "I'm Peyton Manning."

My memory is selective. I remember a lot about baseball, but though I can watch a football game and enjoy it, I'm not likely to care much about the players or remember details of the game afterwards. And the fans turn me off. I find football to be a very weird mix of cracked-out testosterone and homoerotica.

And if you don't know who Peyton Manning is, you don't recognize him on commercials. It's ignorant bliss.

The one sport I can't get into at all is basketball. I went to a game last year, the Bulls vs. some team, I think it was the Portland Pioneers, and I was bored to tears. The atmosphere is fun but the game is stupid. The court is three inches wide and the players are eleven feet tall so they take one step across the court, score, turn around and start all over again. Bor. ing. I waited on the owner of the Bulls once and had no idea who he was, and I made a lewd comment about the oysters. He laughed so hard he turned red. I got fired. This made me none too keen on basketball either.

I remember back in the 70s when Joe Namath did all kinds of ads for shaving cream, cologne, popcorn makers and even panty hose just to name a few. Just think if Namath played now. I saw a piece on his advertising career recently, and overexposure was exactly what they were afraid of.

Peyton Manning is the epitome of "anti-controversey" -- you can make him your pitch man and feel supremely confident that he's not going to do anything crazy, stupid or illegal/amoral to force a hasty re-shoot of your campaign.

The NFL pushes him as the face of the league, and the advertisers respond by giving him work. As long as the commercials stay amusing, I'm not too bothered by it.

If you want to start killing spokespeople, you can start with the Vizio guy.

They are marketing the heck out of this guy, and it's getting a little overboard.

I even watched a special on the marketing of Manning a couple weeks ago. I think it was 60 Minutes (but not sure).

I'm sorry I think it'd be the other way around. I know that this isn't a discussion on how good or not good he is, but Peyton's twice the QB that Broadway Joe was. The thing to think about is how much worse it would be if Peyton played in a big market like NY.

But, as you said, we're not talking about who is the better QB. That's an argument for another day. Namath was one of those guys who men wanted to be like and women wanted to be with. Peyton's a great guy and has a squeaky clean image but he doesn't have the appeal that Namath had. He's no sex symbol. If Namath played in the same era as Peyton, Peyton would be just another QB as far as Madison Ave. is concerned.

How is throwing 49 touchdown passes selfish? That season that offense could not be stopped and its not like Peyton was throwing passes when they were up big at the end of the game just to get the record. The most selfish record in sports? Cal Ripken says hello.

Come on now everyone gets sick, pulls a muscle, doesnt get enough sleep, just doesnt feel 100% I am sure that there were many days where Cal's backup would have performed better but the manager wouldnt dare sit Cal. You should be a Titans fan. His brother is picking apart the worst defense in the NFL right now too. It's not fun.

OTOH, Vince Young is going to be a stud QB for years in the NFL. He's an amazing player. If he had some decent receivers, the Titans would have won, at least, 2 more games.

Eli Manning might be the only player in football that I actually root personally against. The stunt he pulled leading up the draft ranks, in my mind, as one of the most arrogant and bush league moves in recent NFL history.
