A Little Help Please - Clearing up the Reds Salaries & 40 Man Roster

Ok everyone - so I need some help.


I've honestly tired of the nonsensical speculation about how much money the Reds have to spend, who've they've spent it on, how many 40 man rosters slots are open - all over Reds land without anyone really having a definitive correct answer.


So here's my attempt at clearing up some of the muck. All of the pre-Arb players salaries are what they were paid in 2006. Which may fluctuate, but not by much. I've also left open the amount that Aaron Harang & Kyle Lohse will get, because at this point it's all speculation and no one really knows for sure. By my count, I have the Reds coming in just over $56k before those two contracts.


It looks as if the Reds have two open slots on the 40 man. Likely there will be another come the start of ST when Brandon Claussen is put on the 60 man opening up another slot.

Any suggestions, comments or critiques of my breakdown are welcome and appreciated. Thanks

I don't know how Junior's numbers are accounted for. He gets $6m with the rest deferred so that may be different.

Bubba only gets his $400k if he makes the big league roster. I believe its the same with Chad.

PS. I also think you mean $56m not $56k.

Elizardo Ramirez will also be on the 40 man when he is activated from the 60 day DL.

Not that im a credible source but the other night i was in the same boat you were. The other day I grabbed me a sheet of paper and went down the list of players.

Pitcher: Harang, Arroyo, Milton, Stanton, Bray, Majewski, Cormier, and Coffey
Hitters: Ross, Hatteberg, Encarnacion, Gonzo, Dunn, Griffey Jr., Valentin, Moeler, Freel, Denorfia, and Castro
These are the players i considered on the 25-man roster no matter what. I said Ross gets $1 Million and just like you decided not to even guess at Harang. That also means we would have to get a RF, 2 SP, 2 RP.

I came up with somewhere around $53 Million for 19 players (excluding Harang). So if Harang gets a $7 million deal which i dont think he will get any more than that then i have the 20 Players listed above (with Harang at 7 mill, Ross at 1) to make right around $60 Million.

So it sounds like we are both on the same page now.

We don't owe him that. 2 mil was his option salary. Since we are not picking it up, here are the details:

signed deal for 2006 season worth 800K on 12/20/05- + the deal includes a Mutual Option for 2007 worth 2M or a buyout- + the value of the buyout can increase based on appearances in 2006- + was RELEASED on 7/12/06- + 2005 salary: 750K (+ about 200K in performance bonuses)


The buyout is very low is what that means.

Even though Griffey has some money deferred the Reds have to to account for it this year, it gets put in a bank account or something, so they will be spending $12.5M on him this season. It's really a pretty pointless deferral, since it doesn't actually save the team a cent.

My guess is that is the way Jr wanted the contract setup so that he still had money coming into his bank after retirement. It was probably more for his benefit than the team's.

Although, with deferred payments, the Reds could have put aside $14.5M last year (and would only have to pay $10.5M this year) or something like that, so it does give the Reds a "little" flexibility depending on how they've handled it to date. My guess is that only the Reds know how mcuh they owe Jr. this year and going forward.
