View Full Version : Who is most likely to be gone before the season starts?

Which player(s) is/are most likely to be gone via trade before the season starts?

BTW - these are not the players I'd like to see traded, just the ones I think are likely to be traded.

Obviously pure speculation....

Deno - was supposed to be the RF after the trade. Got pulled. Suddenly Conine is in town and Wayne/Jerry are talking about how he can play out field. See also Bubba Crosby. Freel is precieved to be the hometown favorite and Jerry loves how he runs the bases (despite his overall poor performance at said skill). If I was Norris Hopper I wouldn't be buying any homes in Cincinnati either.

Harris - only because of the recient post that claims he feals he'll be traded. Makes no sense in light of "the trade" but see Ross, Cody for other head scratching moves.

Javy Valentine - I think they like Ross and believe he will duplicate his 2006 season. For some bizzare reason they like Molher which leaves Javy out. Of the three he's got some value (how much is debateable) so I think he's the one they will be dangling for potential trades. Then again, Jerry likes 3 catchers (?!?!).

There's probably more I'm forgetting right now.....

Javy was the best lefthanded pinchhitter last year so to keep him available for that role this team needs to carry that 3rd catcher.

I dont see how this team can trade much of anyone else. We have a huge defense gap at Catcher expecially with Ross on the plate full time now. If he backs up and doesn't get ran over gaurding the plate, I might have to play catcher for the Reds myself.

This team is at a huge disadvantage with multi-talented players, we have utility players but none that are multi-talented. Griffey was seriously the last MT player we had, providing good defense and good offense. Edwin may turn into that next year, but his defense is going to need to be boosted a ton. Hatteberg, Ross and Arroyo all need to prove that last year wasn't a fluke; that they can constitently 'bring it'.

Unless we trade most of our "talent" away and completely rebuild, I dont think trading anyone off is going to help much.

totally agree with your statements.
I really would be surprised if any of the main pieces go but you never know..
I wish the reds could have went after McCarthy if the price was reasonable.

Javier Valentin's three-year split as a pinch-hitter:

.193/.264/.337/.601 (83 AB, 0 2b, 0 3b)

Doesn't matter... A prospect for someone who posted good numbers as a rookie? Atleast with McCarthy you KNOW what he can do, with Danks..he's just a projection not a known.

Of this list...

Harris & Freel will probably be traded.

Norris Hopper should be traded for whatever team wants him. He has no place with the Cincinnati Reds.

I don't see Valentin or Denorfia getting traded.

I would say...

Freel.
Harris.
Hopper.
Stanton.
Weathers.
Cormier.

Cash in the vets before their arms fall off on us, and we get stuck with even more dead-waste.:beerme:

Something about the general trade master of the Reds makes me think that he will move Dunn if he can find something to rationalize the move. Probably wrong, but there is just something about this guy and his moves.

Who needs Deno or Freel when you've got a defensive OF of Dunn-Griffey-Conine?

Hope I'm wrong but I believe Deno will be traded.

Denorfia isn't old enough yet to fit into The Plan of Jerry and Wayne. ;)

Deno for Steve Finley sounds good?

I'd like to see the Reds field a team like the Marlins did last year. Except for maybe Harang, burn it down. It just is not reasonable to think they can compete with the direction they are going. Assuming they trade away a bulk of their "talent", I'd wonder what they could do in '08 with Uncle Milty's millions off the books and a talented young team with a year of MLB experience under their belts. Could they recieve the talent needed to do this remains the biggest question mark. It is obvious however that they will continue the futile quest to compete now in this inflated market.

Compared to Danks+ The guy who could turn into a lights out closer? You bet ya I wouldnt trade Bailey+Cueto for him.

I'm saying Shackelford and Ramirez wouldn't have gotten you in the same conversation as McCarthy.

Plus the fact the White Sox don't need a closer. They have Bobby Jenks.

Massets a reliever, most people who follow texas have said he has the stuff to be a lights out closer, aparantly throws hard as well. Who cares. McCarthy will wind up being good for Texas, and I don't see how they can say he won't be a decent starter with a 4 era. He bombed in relief not starting.

Alot of Sox fans are saying if he came in as a long relief and got on a roll, he was very good. Short relief and he bombed.

My question is, who soured on him that fast? Is there something we're not seeing?

Any way back to the topic..

We need to start making these trades ourselves...I'd like to see some of our excess talent go to places for these types of prospects or pitching in general..

Oh wait..

I'd be shocked if both Freel and Deno are still with the team come opening day. Between them, I support trading Freel due to his higher value.

I agree. I think Deno is more likely to be traded, but I think Freel should be the one they are dangiling as trade bait. He's got more value, is more versitile and I think many teams would dig his Rose-esque style of playing.

I'd rather they stick with Deno in CF (probably a pipe dream) and give him a chance to sink or swim. I know Jerry is in love with players who can play anywhere and Deno is strictly an OF type, but we have a stock pile of role players as it is. We will not cease to exist if we don't have Freel.

if the FO was smart the answer would be Arroyo.

Nah, I'd hang onto him until right before the trading deadline, when his services will be most in demand by contenders.

Unless the Reds are contending (within say, 5 games of the lead), in which case I keep him.

What if he reverts back to the pre 2006 Arroyo. His FIP last year was 4.15(a full run higher than his ERA), it is quite possible that 2006 was an aberration.

It doesn't matter -- he is leaving Cincinnati after 2008 anyway. Better to trade him a year early than a year late.

Arroyo would bring a king's ransom in ML-ready prospects. Krivsky could pretty much take his pick.

That's how you rebuild -- sell players when their value is high and maximize your return.

Why we will start the season with three catchers...
1) Javier- signed him to an extenstion near the end of the 2006 season... don't think Wayne signed him so he could trade him
2) Ross- Bronson Arroyo's personal catcher... given Arroyo's success with him, I don't think we'll trade him
3) Chad- just signed him, not going to trade him

the person that is MOST LIKELY to get traded is Ross. But I think if we were looking to trade him, we would have done it right after signing Chad. Don't think it's going to happen. Wayne is losing his mind.

I see you've turned the corner on a rebuild. As have I. Though I still think both options are available to the team (rebuild/contention).

However, as the talent pool shrinks over the course of the offseason, the window to "contend" shrinks as well, so I'm thinking that rebuilding is the better of the two paths at this point.

I cringe at the thought of Krivsky trading Arroyo for prospects, however. I doubt he'd get a guy of even Hirsh's caliber.

It's always been an either-or proposition: either spend the cash to upgrade the rotation, bullpen, and RH power, or deal the players whose contracts are up soon (Arroyo, Harang, Dunn, Griffey, Freel) and bring in some ML-ready talent to compete in 2008-2009.

I haven't really turned the corner so much as realized that the Reds won't commit to supplementing the current roster with enough talent to win. It's sad, because I happen to think Ted Lilly, Justin Speier, Octavio Dotel, and Craig Wilson would have put the Reds smack dab in the middle of the NL wildcard race this year without depleting the talent pool at all.
