LOS ANGELES Dec 26, 2006 (AP)— Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon's scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America's history, has died, his wife said. He was 93.

Rest in peace. Ford always seemed to me to be a decent and extraordinarily sane man.

Gerald Ford is one of those guys who I've always had a quiet respect for.
He is the first President I vaguely remember taking office - though I do remember Nixon's last chopper ride, though I was only six at the time.
I do very vivedly remember his last walk down Penn. Avenue. He actually seemed rather relieved that day.
May he rest in peace.

All those years in Washington as a congressmen and then in the White House and not one scandal, not one. We need more Gerald Fords.

There was a bit of controversy when he pardoned Nixon. Many people felt that Nixon made a deal with him on that but that's purely heresay and speculation. But you're right, George. The country would be a whole lot better off if there were more Gerald Fords in public service.

Probably one of the most misunderstood US Presidents of all time.

RIP

It is ironic that Ford, because of a few well publicized stumbles, had a reputation while president of being an athletic klutz. I'd guess that such contemporary presidents as Kennedy and Reagan were regarded as better athletes. Actually, Ford was probably the best athlete to serve as president since Teddy Roosevelt. He was a three year letter winner at the University of Michigan, where he played on consecutive undefeated football teams in 1932-33, he was the Wolverines MVP in 1934, he played in a college all star game, and he turned down offers from the Lions and Packers to play in the NFL.
