I've never understood stuff like this. Why hate people who live and die by their team. People who talk about their team all year long. People who know everything about their team and will share that information with anyone who will listen, and with those who don't listen too.

You know, kind of like the way everyone on RedsZone feels about the Reds.

Who wins, by how much?

Aw man I was waiting for you to tell us first, so that I could bump your call by a couple pts and mooch the credit. :D

Regardless of the outcome, Ohio State had a fine season at 12-0 to date, and in my mind they already won the championship by leading Michigan as time ran out on a great season for both teams.

50 days or so is a long time to be off in sports.

Florida won ugly they say during the season and at times did not blow away the competition. Not a good reason to deny a team though that I have watched on occasions and was unimpressed by.

I think that Ohio State is more fluid and methodical on offense and they did well against a Michigan defense that I have a lot of respect for.
I don't see Florida winning as I think that they are less efficient. Though Hart showed me that Ohio States defense has some holes, I don't see Florida taking advantage of a Tressel coached team.

Ohio State by 17.

OSU 42 Michigan 39, Oh wait, that already happened. After that game was played, it was hard for me to really get into this National Championship game. I feel that the Bucks win comfortably in this one.

On a side note, after seeing how handedly USC beat Michigan, I'm glad that the Bucks didn't have to face USC for the title. I hereby retract any negative stuff I've ever said about their football program and Pete Carroll as a coach.

They're a talented group of kids with tons of team speed. They have an offense that is difficult to game against because it relies so much on misdirection and can burn you at any time with gadget plays. They play against some of the top defenses in the nation in the SEC, so you know they're ready to play against Ohio State.

On defense, they have speed at all positions at well. They should be adequately set to neutralize Ginn (because Ginn really does 2 things well -- WR screen and run the fly) and should be able to keep most of what happens in front of them. The question is if they can be physical between the trenches and if they can make the open-field tackles on the intermediate and short passing lanes.

This is a good Florida team. They don't just hand the SEC title out each year. Urban Meyer is a great coach. Plus, Florida is the underdog. They're playing with everything to prove. I expect them to come out ready to play and to take the game right to OSU.

31-17 OSU

Why? Not because I'm an obnoxious Buckeye fan, but because Tressel is going to be throwing so many different defensive schemes (substitutions) at the Florida QB AND Florida's defense, as speedy and talented as it is, will wear down trying to cover OSU (Smith and receiving corp).

Gonzalez will have a solid game because they'll still be worried about guys like Ginn. ;)

I'm not a fan of either team. But I thought from the beginning this year that OSU had the best talent, and I don't think there's a team in college football that can hang with them.

To the OSU fans...when OSU alums introduce themselves in those NFL lineups, why do they say "THE Ohio State University"? Is there another one?

Red Leader

38-14 Ohio State. I would have given Florida a FG, but since their kicker sucks, I just couldn't do it.

I expect the first quarter to be a "feel your opponent out" quarter. Both teams will take shots early, but neither will connect. End of 1st quarter 3-0 Ohio State.

2nd quarter both teams will start to have some success. I look for OSU to score twice in the 2nd quarter. One off of a pass and one off of a run. Florida will score on a trick play or blown coverage play. Halftime: OSU 17-7.

The third quarter is where things will start getting ugly. OSU will make half time adjustments and Florida will be left behind. 2 more TD's for Ohio State, one on their opening drive of the 2nd half. Florida will score late in the 3rd quarter to pull closer, but the game really won't be close the whole way.

Ohio State is the best team in the country this year. There is no doubt about that at all, and there will be no doubts about that during or after this game.

I'm not going to say Florida can't win, because I think they can, but there better be a lot more to them than speed. All I keep hearing is "Florida's fast"...well, that's just not going to get it done. Texas and Michigan are very fast as well.

To me, the whole game comes down to how well Ohio State executes. If they take care of the ball, and do pretty well on third down, they'll win. If they don't, Florida can win.

Conversely, If Florida turns the ball over a couple of times, the game could get real ugly in the second half.

The start of this game reminds me of the USC-Iowa Orange Bowl back in 2002. Iowa returned the opening kickoff 100 yards to take a 7-0 lead and everyone thought Iowa was going to destroy SC. Some feller named Carson Palmer led the Trojans right down the field and Justin Fargas ran one in from 4 or 5 yards out to tie the game at 7. SC never looked back and went on to win 38-17. Not saying this is what Florida will do...

Lou's not even a real person anymore. You can almost see the marionette strings making his arms move.

When he was on the other night talking about Nick Saban going back to the SEC, instead of talking about Saban, or the Tide, he launched into a tear filled whinefest of why he never should have left the Jets all those years ago. True. And I'm not trying to take anything away from Florida. OSU has yet to answer Urban's play calling on offensive. Defensive adjustments have to be made by OSU obviously.

But I think having that many days off, by either team, is just too much. And we're seeing that effect right now with OSU's performance... stupid penalties, giving up good field position, sluggish play. This, right now, is not the same OSU team I've watched all year.

Does anyone think that Fox is doing a lousy job of showing anything OSU...fans, cheerleaders, band, etc? I know OSU hasn't done much, but all they are showing is Florida this, Florida that.
I hope they shake the rust off in the 2nd half.Fox producers would rather show their audience fans in the stands cheering as opposed to sitting on their hands, no?

Well, OSU's defense was never that great to begin with. But they're playing such a soft zone, they're leaving a huge opening between 5-10 yard that Leak is sitting there throwing to wide open receivers who are just running across this area. He's making it look easy.

If OSU's offense was playing even decent, this would be a close game right now. I'm not surprised to see Florida winning, but I can't believe how poorly the OSU offense is playing. They're better than this. Much better. Florida's defense is good, but this is as much about OSU as it is them.

I knew Ohio State was going to have a tough time against Florida's defense. But I never thought that Florida's offense would be so dominant. What do they average a game? 21 points? I've been an Ohio State fan all my life but have only lived in Columbus the last few years. I find myself almost glad that Florida has done this in the first half after everyone in Columbus ordered their 2007 National Champions T-shirts after the Michigan game. The majority of Ohio State fans up here have such a warped view of reality and their football team, it's absurd. I just hope everyone keeps their sanity tonight if this game continues as it is. That fumble followed by the TD was the nail in the coffin. 13 points can be overcome with one stop and a good drive. 20 points is too much. You basically have to score on every possession and not allow then to score at all.

OSU's offense line is getting owned by the UF D-line.

The OSU coaches are getting owned by the UF coaches.

I want to be mad at the OSU defense, but always tough when the opposing team gets the ball numerous times to start their drives on your side of the 50. Bad kicking/punting not helping matters... and an o-line that cannot make blocks on 3rd-and-1 and (4th-and-1... punt!).

My $.02, this looks really bad. But I think that we should not underscore the lack of Ted Ginn Jr.'s presence. The other recievers can normally work against one on one coverage or zones with the safeties deeper. Ted Ginn's abscence removes the need for deep safety play. I cringed when Tressel went for it on the fourth down, but the team really needed a spark and Chris Wells had not been stopped all year. In retrospect it looks like something silly that Charlie Weiss would do.

OSU defense looking really poor. Why is James Laurinitis being forced to cover Percy Harvin one on one? I can't help but think the coaches underestimated Florida's speed and most importantly their skill. Ohio State has given up 73 points over the last 6 quarters. Chris Leak is an average quarterback, and he is just being allowed to hit that underneath stuff at will. The lack of quality play from the safety position is just killing Ohio State.

Florida has been fantastic, and their offense has been especially good.

I am not the slightest bit upset right now, because quite frankly Florida has just been flat out better.

The Auburn blocked punt against Florida won the season's biggest "Game Changing Moment?" That wasn't even the biggest moment within THAT GAME.

The biggest play was when Leak's incomplete pass was ruled a pump fake/fumble. That call sealed the Auburn victory and ended up being the only blemish on Florida's record.

By the way, Auburn should be ineligible by virtue of their inability to decide on a mascot over the last 100 years.

Now back to our regular scheduled programming.

Well, when they're getting massive pressure on the QB without having to blitz, that means they have 5 DBs only having to cover for about 3 seconds. There's not a damn thing Smith could have done about it. As soon as the Buckeyes had to abandon the run, the game was over. And losing Ginn just added to it as it meant the DBs no longer had to worry about a deep threat. OSU coaches were about as bad as you could be this game. This one's on them. I think the advantage goes to the underdog here, I really do.By any stretch of the imagination, I have no idea what you are talking about. You could play this game again tomorrow and the outcome would be the same. This was a complete dismantling of a team that you witnessed tonight.

Don't feel bad, because I have been there as well. I flew across the country exactly eleven years ago to attend the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. It was my alma mater versus Nebraska. There I sat, in Sun Devil Stadium, with one of my best friends--who just so happened to be a Nebraska fan.

Florida entered that game 12-0 and was outmatched from the get go. That Nebraska team I watched was the single-most dominant team I have ever witnessed in person. Long night, I can assure you.

Here's my point, I thought that Florida was the best team on the field until the game started. After about 10 minutes, I couldn't wait to get out of that stadium. I have never--not once--tried to make any excuses for the way my team performed that night. Osborne took Spurrier to school that night.

Tonight, Tressel was the one sitting in the corner wearing the dunce cap...but you are trying to explain this game away due to "layoffs" and "underdog momentums."

So your saying that if both teams got the same time off....36 days, this would be a totally different game?

No.

If you are destroying people- like the Buckeyes were- the worst thing that can happen to you is taking time off. Rest is not good when you have momentum. Two weeks? Maybe it doesn't affect it, but 2 months? My dear, that's a lifetime in sports.

So that team that was beating everybody all year long is now awful? Shellshocked?

If they played the week after beating Michigan, you think this would have happened? The Florida Gators would have walzted in and spanked their tail?

I'm not making excuses for the Buckeyes- they got beat tonight. But the fact remains that they beat the tar out of the nation this year and the worst thing that can happen to a team is to take a few months off when you are rolling like they were. It happens.

I live in Florida and am a Gators fan, so I'm not sure how I'm biased for Ohio State. I was torn over who to root for to be honest.

I can just see how this could happen to a team. The underdog has an advantage in mindset here.

I just know going into this that the Buckeyes were the better team, and not playing 51 days couldn't have helped their momentum. Geesh, they were tearing people up and then they do this?

Obviously Tressel didn't have them ready to play tonight, but man, I've played sports before and I know that time off can be an enemy, especially being such a favorite.

But you are correct- good teams should come ready to play and the Buckeyes didn't do that.

While that is true, I can't see this happening back in November. No way.

Ask yourself this: Would the Buckeyes have played this way back in November?

They did play this way back in November -- their defense was listless against Michigan too.

They combined that poor defensive performance with an offense that wasn't prepared for the strength and speed of the Florida defense and it was a recipe for disaster. Losing Ginn didn't do OSU any favors, admittedly.

Florida's defense exposed Troy Smith and Urban Meyer outcoached Jim Tressel. Plain and simple.

It would be wise in a case like this to say Florida is not as good as they played tonight, nor is Ohio State as bad as they were made to look. Any posturing by a UF fan or other observer would be disingenuous as any one beside Urban Meyer's mother that predicted this outcome probably also sees pink elephants and blue bunnies knocking at their back door right now. Way to go UF, talk about picking the right night to play a perfect half of football and making it stick.

In a game so overwhelmingly lopsided, there isn't much room for analysis, and this is not an excuse, but I think that Tressel may have gameplanned to really feature Teddy Ginn tonight. That is strictly a hunch, but it is really the only thing I can come up with to explain the fact that they had absolutely no answer on O tonight. The only other thing I noticed was that UF must have done something on D that was not accounted for in prepping the Oline. Not having seen them play one game, I have no idea how the D normally schemes, but the OLine had absolutely no clue how to block them, and I can't think it all had to with "speed." They had to do something that confused everybody. But far be it from the announcers to give any pointers. I wouldn't want to listen to that trio ever again. They had nothing to add and were making nothing more than basic observations that I was making from my couch.

I love the Boise State stroy as much as the next guy. And I have a real soft spot for Idaho because I lived there for two years and my dad and generations before my dad were born there. But they couldn't play with any of the other top 5 teams realistically.

Tressel should have gameplanned power running between the tackles. Putting Smith back there in that shotgun just made him mincemeat for the speedy FL DEs.

Wisconsin goes 12-1, win a bowl game, have one of the best defenses in the country, and they'll probably go down in the polls. Penn State got really better as the year went on, a very tough team at years end.

The better football team won the game.I don't know about speed, because there were just guys going unblocked all night, which tells me they had Ohio State confused for some reason. The one play that sticks out is Alex Boone taking one step inside while a DL lined up off his shoulder pad goes unabated to the QB. The push the D-Line for Florida was getting was up the middle and from the defensive tackles. It had nothing to do with speed. The speed everyone keeps talking about is from the DBs, RBs, and WRs. Smith didn't have enough time for OSU receivers to have to worry about the speed of the seconday tonight. And there sure wasn't any speed from the Florida RBs that hurt OSU much. And almost all the completed passes were routes ran 10 yards or less. That was the brilliance of the offensive gameplan for Florida. They kept throwing nothing but short passes. The Buckeye defense was playing so far back, they didn't need to use any speed.

Florida's defense dominated, but it was either strength, scheme, or something else. Speed wasn't the reason.

The OSU linebackers laid back for the entire first half. They played reactive defense. Anyone who watched the Bengals-Colts game this year knows what that leads to.

Bottom line: Chris Leak is, under normal circumstances, a very unreliable quarterback. In the second half, when OSU brought pressure, he proved that. But in the first half he was permitted to do whatever he wanted. And Florida dominated.

They brought pressure, but they kept throwing quick and short passes. That was their entire gameplan. There were very few balls thrown down the field and it's probably because Meyer knew Leak didn't perform well under a heavy pass rush. It worked.

Florida had the perfect gameplan to match what OSU was doing on both sides of the ball. Had OSU gameplanned differently, their schemes might not have worked as well. Again, sometimes you just have to tip your cap and say it just wasn't our night. The other team did everything right tonight and we did nothing right. It's easier to take than a nailbiter where one play was the difference. I don't think this takes away from the team OSU was this year. That's the one thing I'm afraid is going to happen. People are going to use this game and say OSU was never that good to begin with. That's not a fiar assessment. They were a very good team and I don't think there are few teams that could play with them. Blowouts aren't always the result of a team being that much better overall than another team. On this night they were much better, but OSU is not as bad as they played tonight. I think it's fair to say that without it being sour grapes.

Yup -- that's what it honestly looked like to me.

Florida came out of the gate ready to play and prepared. Ohio State was confused on both sides of the football and, other than Ted Ginn's kickoff return, looked like a team that couldn't get out of it's own way.

I don't argue that a lot of stuff went Florida's way tonight, but I think you'd be hard pressed to say Tressel had his team prepared for Florida. They didn't have much of an offensive gameplan, and when things weren't working they were really slow to change.

These teams weren't 27 points apart. I'd give Florida 10 points on just being "on" tonight while OSU was "off" -- the other 17 have to come from somewhere, and it seemed like Florida was just more prepared.

It's cliche, but its what everyone at the bar I was at was talking about during the game: preparedness and in-game strategy.
