Right-hander Jason Johnson, who was 3-12 with a 6.35 ERA with three clubs last season, has agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with the Seibu Lions, FOXSports.com has learned.
The deal includes an additional $3 million in incentives, according to a source with knowledge of the contract, making it possible for Johnson to far exceed the $3.5 million he earned last season.
Johnson, 32, began last season with the Indians after signing as a free agent, then was traded to the Red Sox for cash on June 21.
The Red Sox released him on Aug. 28 after he went 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in four starts. The Reds signed Johnson two days later, and used him as a reliever four times in September.
In Japan, Johnson will join a Seibu team that is trying to upgrade its starting pitching after losing right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka to the Red Sox.
Johnson was 55-98 in the majors with a 4.99 career ERA.
