The Pittsburgh Pirates, filling their need for a left-handed power bat, acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche from the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday for lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez, two sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

ESPN.com could not immediately confirm if other players were involved in the deal.

LaRoche hit 32 homers and drove in 90 runs last season and finished in a tie for seventh in the National League with a .561 slugging percentage.

Gonzalez went 3-4 with 24 saves and a 2.17 ERA for the Pirates in 2006.

finally happened. Makes me wonder who the closer is for the Pirates. Actually I like the Braves end of this deal better. I guess a lot depends on how one views the 2nd half of 2006 that LaRoche had.

Great deal for PIT. No one is going to pick them to surprise this year.. except me.

They'll surprise themselves...they'll finish 5th in front of the Cubs.

I like the Pittsburgh side of this deal too. Never trade everday players for relievers as we all know.

A couple of minor league players are also in the deal according to one paper. The Braves will get minor league shortstop Brent Lillibridge and the Pirates will get minor league OF Jamie Romak.

Careful. They were my surprise pick last year, and that didn't work out too well.

I wonder if the Pirates don't know something about Gonzalez's health. We'll see.

Yes, one of the "Classic Blunders." Others include:
1. Never fight a land war in Asia.
2. Never go in with a Sicilian when death is on the line.

They sure used him sparingly.

The Pirates seemed awfully eager to trade Gonzalez during the offseason.

So who replaces LaRoche for the Braves?

So who replaces LaRoche for the Braves?

Scott Thorman who played first with them a bit last year.

His bio per mlb.com
Made his Major League debut on June 18 against the Red Sox, and hit his first career homer in a July 5 game against the Cardinals. Enjoyed a successful July, during which he hit .341 with four homers and nine RBIs. But he finished with just 12 hits in his final 56 big-league at-bats. Batted .298 (92-for-309) with 15 homers and 48 RBIs at Triple-A Richmond.

You, Cincinnati Chilli and I apparently see the same thing. If th ekid was so good and closers are a hard commodity to get, why trade him? The Braves' first baseman looks like a great steal for the Buccos. They needed a bat and got one. If they did fleece the Braves, I'm smiling.

Good closers are kind of like fine table linens. 4-star restaurants absolutely need them, but they're pretty much useless to Arby's and Pizza Hut.

Good pickup.
