Yankee Stadium All-Star announcement set

January 23, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Baseball is set to announce Yankee Stadium as site of the 2008 All-Star game.

Commissioner Bud Selig will hold a news conference at New York's City Hall with Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Jan. 31. Selig has said since last summer that Yankee Stadium was a leading candidate for the game.

The ballpark, which opened in 1923, is scheduled to close after the 2008 season, and the Yankees will move into a new stadium, being built across a street, the following year.

This year's All-Star game will be at San Francisco, and the 2009 game will be in St. Louis.

The timing of the news conference was reported Tuesday by Newsday.

I just don't see what the big deal about the All-Star game is anymore. IMO, it's lost its luster since inter-league play and doesn't serve much of a purpose. I used to love watching that game. Now, i'm lucky to watch more than an inning or two.

Plus, Cincinnati had the All-Star game here in 1988, wouldn't it be fair if we had to wait for every other team to host the game before it comes back here?

I didn't know when Cincy last had it so that's why I asked.

I have no problem at all with MLB saying goodbye to Yankee Stadium.

Regardless of how you feel about the Yankees, and I personally hate them, Yankee Stadium is a national treasure and should be celebrated accordingly.

Thank goodness the Reds aren't nicknamed the Sheep Herders or something......

First ASG in New York since 1977, last year of Yankee Stadium, the Yanks deserve it. Congratuations to them, and may their World Series drought contiune!:D

I have no problem with St. Louis getting the 2009 ASG, but I may flip out if MLB puts the ASG in a city like Pittsburgh just 12 years after their last. What about Cincinnati, who hasn't hosted one in 19 years? What about Arizona, who has never hosted one? Then again, that big hole next to the stadium certainly couldn't help things in the Reds' case...but still...

Hey I know, lets have one in Colorado again! Or maybe Atlanta!
