Sounds like he has a lot of potential and is extremely young...let's move on it Wayne...

Mariners designated RHP Yorman Bazardo for assignment.

Not a good idea. Bazardo has a better arm than half the pitchers on the Mariners' 40-man roster and just managed a 3.64 ERA as a 21-year-old in Double-A (he turned 22 in July). Bill Bavasi obviously didn't anticipate the roster crush when he added both Michael Garciaparra and potential lefty specialist Ryan Rowland-Smith to the 40-man prior to the Rule 5 draft. Both are less valuable properties than Bazardo, as is Sean White, the right-hander Seattle took from the Braves in the Rule 5 draft. We can't imagine Bazardo making it through waivers.

AA stats: 6-5 3.64 era 138.3 innings, 144 hits, 80 K, 45 BBs

Good call. He'd be worth a 40 man spot over lots of our current guys.

Please get him WK. K's are a little low, but I'd rather have him at AAA than a number of the minor league free agents signed this offseason.

Bazardo pitched for Venezuela last night. 3 Shut out innings, 1 hit, 5 Ks.

He evidently wasn't concerned with the news.

Get him Wayne. Kid has a very good arm and he beats the hell out of Brian Meadows.

No kidding this could be a great pickup for the Reds!

I'd be shocked if Bazardo made it past the D-Rays on the claim list, but if he trickles down to the Reds for some reason, then I'd consider it a case of the Reds having fallen asleep if they let him pass by.

The Reds will not get a chance at him!! Too far down the waiver wire

I watched that game last night and they were raving about him. The game itself went 18 innings with Venezuela scoring a run in the top of the inning and DR scoring 2 in the bottom half to win 4-3. Lots of good pitching. DR had a kid from the Royals organization named Leo Nunez which had a really live arm and I was impressed with him. Jose Lima started for DR and Miguel Tejeda and Tony Bautista homered for them.

Rotoworld.com:

Tigers acquired RHP Yorman Bazardo from the Mariners for outfielder Jeff Frazier.

We're stunned that a team with less pitching depth didn't make a better off. Getting Bazardo for practically free is another great move for Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski. Bazardo, 22, had a 3.64 ERA in Double-A last year and shows potential as both a starter and a reliever. The Tigers will probably groom him as a reliever. He would have been more of a candidate to contribute this year on a lesser team.

Bazardo is not very good....fastball somewhere around 90 mph with NO movement, a slider that has never developed and no out pitch. His best case upside is that of a middle reliever. He's the definition of minor league fodder at this point-you can find literally tons of similar guys in minor league systems across the nation.

This is not one that got away....

And by the way, this is proof that rotoworld is a great resource for getting the latest news and rumors on players but they really aren't a very good resource concerning the intricacies of minor league systems... (i.e. their facts are useful, their commentary should be taken with a grain of salt)

Here's what our contemporaries think over at USS Mariner:

The M’s have traded Yorman Bazardo to the Detroit Tigers for Jeff Frazier, a 24-year-old outfielder who is a longshot to be a major leaguer. Frazier was a 3rd round pick in the 2004 draft out of Rutgers University, and wasn’t horrible in his first two years of professional baseball, but didn’t exactly light the world on fire either. When given an assignment to the high-A Florida State League last year, he hit about as poorly as anyone in baseball not named Tuiasasopo. His .228/.279/.346 line, as a 24-year-old in A ball, is horrible, even for the pitching friendly environs of the FSL.

Now, one bad year doesn’t end a career, and scouts have always liked Frazier, so maybe he’s a late bloomer who just needs to get out of a pitcher’s park to remember how to hit. But, it’s not likely. The M’s made this deal after designating Bazardo for assignment last week (to make room for Jeff Weaver), as they figure Frazier is better than losing him on waivers. Bazardo had never impressed them after coming over from the Marlins, so they’d have taken anything they could get for him.

In this case, what they got is a 24-year-old outfielder who couldn’t hit A-ball pitching. You’re unlikely to ever care about this trade again.
