It is times like these - those dark days between the Super Bowl and the beginning of spring training - that are toughest.
Usually, I just take a couple of boxes of baseball cards, spread them all over the floor, then roll around them naked.

Actually, I'm not missing it as much as some years. My oldest daughter found out that at her age, there will be tryouts to assign kids to levels in her little league (she has graduated from t-ball). She's had me out in the yard tossing/fielding balls almost nightly since before Christmas...and i don't mean just weather permitting either. Fortunately she doesn't mind working off of the tee in the garage. Then I warm the cockles by coming inside and hitting the redzone with some steaming coco and marshmellows in tow.....

Missing it enough that I'm considering getting the Extra Innings package this year. I bought it every year since it became available until last season. It was a rough summer without Reds baseball.

I miss it badly. As I get older, sports overall have become less important to me. However, baseball seems to become more of a passion--and as the cold winter drags on--the one thing that makes me very happy is that spring training is just around the corner.

I can't wait to Mr. Harang and Mr. Arroyo report next week!

My neighbors said they could always tell when spring is nearing because my son and I would be out front tossing the ball back and forth. One neighbor said she told her co-workers that it was like something out of the 1950's (albeit me with a beard - that's not such a Ward Cleever look!). Last year was the first year since he was four that he didn't play ball. This year he's itching, but the only teams for kids his age (18) seem to be the select teams. One college he looked at (Marquette) has intramural baseball, and that's his top choice (we're going up this weekend for their scholarship competition - send some prayers up, folks, because he can only go there with a huge scholarship!).

Here's what I think of with Spring Training - my Grandma. Every winter my Grandma would spend a few months with my mom's brother's family down in Hollywood, Florida (near Miami). She was a huge Reds fan, she even cried when we traded "Frankie" Robinson; she had a parakeet named Purkey. Always while down there, she and Uncle Andy and my cousins would make their way up to Tampa to watch the Reds in Spring Training. She died in 1967, so she never got to see the Big Red Machine.
