A slow day here at the office got me thinking; with all the uniform changes, will the batting helmets stay the same?

I wonder if they'll keep the red helmet with a black bill and wear them both at home and on the road or if they will be new altogether.

Anybody know anything?

I hope they go with an all-Red batting helmet, especially with the home unis.

I read in an aricle, the other day, that some of the players were complaining about the new helmets looking sort of NASCAR. I sincerely hope that they don't go the route of the Mets with the new helmets that are supposedly cooler. That black and blue scheme was nasty.

Randy, you may know this more than I do since your son is playing ball, but there was a new Wilson Helmet like you just described at Dick's Sporting Goods that was Red with Black trim. They had it with an "air" pocket - supposively they are like football helmets as far as "size to fit".

They look like this -

I doubt they will be as flashy as that.

Here's the Mets helmet that Randy alluded to earlier.

Those Mets helmets are butt ugly. I hope they stick with the classic helmet. It sounds like they might not, though.

I can live with it if it is all red, but adding the black would look awful. The classic helmets look the best. I won't even buy my son one of those ugly things, and by the way, he thinks they are ugly, too. Rawlings and Wilson both make a similar helmet.

What is sad, is when you see one of the boys show up with one of the Pony-tail helmets made for girls or with a bat made for girls softball. The parents don't know any better, and then the kid takes a beating from the rest of the kids for having a girls helmet or bat. You'd be surprised how many times that happens.

Here's the quote Randy's referring to:

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070223/SPT04/702230422/1071

Quote of the day: A lot of the Reds have complained about their new batting practice helmets, which do have a NASCAR look. "You know what I tell 'em?" third base coach Mark Berry said. "Better than wearing a hard hat."

The part that sticks out to me is that they referred to the new "batting practice helmets". I didn't know they had such, but this makes me optimistic that whatever atrocity they're making them wear in BP won't be used in games.
