I was kind of wondering where Steve Stewart landed and I saw that he is a member of the Reds "speaker's bureau" and that he will broadcast a few Spring training games on Reds.com. What is the Reds speaker's bureau?

Gordy Coleman was the Reds Speakers Bureau Kingpin for years.

Anytime the community wants someone to speak on behalf of the Reds at Optimist Clubs, or Rotary Clubs, or JayCees, or even just community events, the Reds send out a speaker's bureau rep. Steve will go out there and spread the gospel of Reds baseball to anyone who will listen. Usually the speaker comes armed with goodies (i.e. tickets, apparel, hats, etc.) to give away. Used to be, if there was a big series upcoming, they'd be out stomping up support.

Gordy Coleman would tell some pretty good stories.

Thanks Heath!

Sounds like quite a demotion for Steve though. He'd better get a "day job".

You have to sometimes take a demotion in order to keep your voice on the air.

True. But the funny part of Gordy Coleman was that he was a horrible speaker. He made Harry Caray look like a Shakespearian thespian. But, boy was Gordy funny. And he could tell stories.

Steve Stewart would be the anti-Gordy. But, he'd be able to speak to the business community about the Reds and be very good at it. I would also think that if the Reds PA announcer was "under the weather", Steve's the guy.

You gotta feel for a guy like Steve Stewart. He's trying to pursue a dream a lot of us can emphasize with. He wants to be a baseball announcer. Such jobs are taken by ex-athletes and "legacies". I wonder if it burns Steve that guys with last names of Brennaman, Buck, Carey, Albert, (Ernie) Johnson and Schaap get all kinds of opportunities but newcomers to the field are rarely heard. I can't believe the only young, talented guys coming out of broadcast school just happen to have Dads in the field. I would certainly discourage such a career path if I had a son deciding what to do.

Is this right? Steve is still in the organization? I am shocked. I really liked him and had hoped that he had caught on with someone over the winter.

Who knew that the Reds had their own speakers bureau?

You also have to take a demotion sometimes to keep your family in a stable reliable environment. He has young boys in school, one is sick, they bought a house in Cincy. I think it takes a real man to put his own career aside, and put his family first. The Reds are a "real" organization for offering him a job as well. I think they thought he was screwed over and tried to make better a bad situation.

At various times over the winter, Marty reported on Hot Stove league that the BadBoy was one of three finalists for a position on the FSN Milwaukee Brewers TV team and one of two finalists for a radio position with the SanDiego Padres broadcast team.

The Reds were counting on the Ol' Lefthander for around 25 games this year. I wonder if he will be able to do them all and if not if Steve will get the call then. Also I have been wondering if Steve might not be worked into the FSN pregame or post game coverage.

It looks to me like the whole situation with Steve has turned out to be that Mr. Castellini felt he needed an ex-player in the booth; and then when they saw Thom Brennaman was a true possibility, that was an oppurtunity they could not walk away from. I agree that now it looks like they are trying to do right by Steve who basically was just caught in the middle of a difficult situation. I guess if he were a player, somebody would say he got "caught in a numbers game", as the old saying goes. I hope something works out for him and think it would be great if it might turn out to still be with the Reds in future.

I don't hear miuch Cincy radio except WLW and see even less Cincy TV. Is the BadBoy getting any air time on any radio stations or perhaps weekend TV sports duty?

I've said it before and will say it again Steve is the definition of class.

I for one enjoyed and appreciated his PBP. Seems like he never got real comfortable making all the calls but he was always getting better.

The Reds chose to go in a different direction in the radio booth. I have no clue as to why or how this decision was made but I can live with it.

I have no doubt Steve wiil do well in the Speakers Bureau untill he gets another chance to fulfill his life long dream. I wish him nothing but the best.

700 WLW has been disguising their 6-9 pm slot as a Sportstalk Show for years.

I'd like to see Steve host that show and do the exta innings show after Reds games untill his dream comes true.

That is a great idea. Probably a little too classy for WLW though.

I liked Stewart as well and didn't really see the need for a change. I think Thom Brennamen is great and its hard not to like Joe. I heard a little of Brantley over the week-end and he seems ok too.

As much as Marty seems to hate being there (from the things he says on the air) and with Joe's health, I could see them leaving the scene in a couple years. I'd hate to see Stewart in limbo that long, but I'd be happy if he were added to the mix now with an expanded role later on.

I believe I recently read that Steve Stewart's contract with the Reds runs thru March 31.

It'll be interesting to see if he's still hanging around after that date.
