What does one need in order to view videos in avi format?

I thought .avi was pretty standard. I've never had trouble with it.

It could possibly be a codec problem. Make sure your media player is up to date. Some files might require other codecs that you can get from downloading a program like Divx.

Really? I've never been able to play avi files, and I'm having no luck in downloading anything to make them work.

Avi's can use any number of codecs.

Use this program to find out what codecs you need
codec information appliance (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/)

Okay, I downloaded it and ran it, but I'm not really sure what it's telling me... :help:

Under file and Open direct it to a video file you want to watch, then on the right it will tell you what codec you need.

Most of the time when an AVI file doesnt play, you dont have the correct codec. I wouldnt be surprised if you need the Divx codec and the videos you are trying to watch are all encoded that way.

That seems to be what the problem was. It's working now. Thanks everyone!

Now I have a new question. I'm trying to make a VCD, and when I converted from the avi file to mpeg1, the picture transferred, but there is no audio. Any idea why?
