View Full Version : Who's your all-time favorite Reds players?

Redlegs
03-21-2007, 11:18 PM
Excluding the Big Red Machine teams of '75 & '76.

My top five are probably:

5. Barry Larkin
4. Dave Parker
3. Sean Casey
2. Chris Sabo
1. Mario Soto

Soto's career is one of the sad stories in Reds history. He played on the worst Reds teams in my lifetime. It would have been fun to watch him on a playoff caliber team.

Redlegs original post starting this thread said to exclude members of the Big Red Machine teams of 1975 and 1976. That makes it a little easier for me. It would be even tougher had he specified excluding members of any team during the BRM era, which would roughly span 1969, when the term was first used, through 1978; after the firing of Sparky and the departure of Rose, the BRM era ended.

It starts and ends with Jim Maloney for me.

He's the only player I could ever truly say was my favorite player.

It stated with getting his baseball card (and the Topps all star coins) in 1965, and I became a Reds fan because of it.

Davis, Davis, Davis.

We never really had closure to our relationship (Babe, I'm just going to California to work for a while...I think I'm going to retire now...no, look, here I am! I told you I'd come back to you!...gonna take a few more business trips now but we can still see each other...oh look I have a fatal illness...no, I beat it! I am Superman!!!), so it's been hard for me to truly move on emotionally. I loved others since too, of course, a lot, but if they get too close to Eric Davis's pedastal he shoves them right off. He is man enough that he takes up the whole damn thing.

So I could list five favorites, but in reality, it's Davis, then everyone else.

For pure belly laughs (like until your muscles ache):

C- Bo Diaz (Dann Bilardello close second)
IF - Lenny Harris (play the Marty tape, nuff said)
2B - Ron Oester (undisputed king of the major league pop up)
OF - Wily Mo Pena (the ultimate sweet and sour, how can anything that good and that bad exist in the same body?)
SP - Tom Browning (in the rooftops at Wrigley)

Not the most talented souls generally, but I have laughed my head off at their expense most of my life.

good list; I'd add to that the memories of Lou Piniella ripping 1st base off it's support and winging it across the infield, Paul O'Neill fumbling with a pop-fly, and then finally drop-kicking it in frustration, and my all time favorite laugh as a Reds fan, Pedro Borbon, actually taking a bite out of a Mets hat (WillieMays??) after the Harrelson-Rose brawl in 1973. Borbon put his hat back on after the melee, found out it was a Mets hat, and promptly took a bite out of it. :beerme:

off-topic, but good memories!

Eric Davis, Barry Larkin, Dave Parker, Mario Soto, Tom Browning, Jose Rijo.

Since they have been mentioned in several replies, how about Johnny Bench and Mario Soto together in the Reds dugout yesterday? (I didn't see it until last night when I got home and watched the game on Tivo.) I know Soto was around, but Bench surprised me. He looks like he could still catch as long as it wasn't a day game after a night game. Bench is my all-time favorite Red by far.
