I had not seen this discussed recently so I thought it worthwhile to post a link. Number 1 overall picks since 1965.

Intersting list; some like Brien Taylor and now Wilson just never came back from the injuries.

Interesting list. When Josh Hamilton comes into a game, he'll become the 4th player who was first overall to play for the Reds: Tim Belcher, Ken Griffey, Paul Wilson and Josh Hamilton.

I believe he was 13 or 14. Woulda been the number #1 pick but his demands and threats of college scared off everyone all the way to the A's

Nevermind, he was like 14th... I thought he was close to the 1st pick for some reason...

What's interesting is that clubs seem to be better overall at judging the best talent in the past decade or so. Since the semi-tragic Brien Taylor thing in 1991, every other player has made the majors and had some success or is on track to do so (like Hamilton) except for Bryan Bullington (2002), who should still make the majors either this year or next (although he's not likely to be much more than a marginal pitcher). The exception: Matt Bush (2004).

And before Taylor, you have to go back to the legendary Shawn Abner (1984) to find another guy who was a real flop. Meanwhile, back in the '60s and '70s, the landscape was littered with washouts.

My point: Scouting seems to have improved drastically.

Has there been a worse pick in recent years than Matt Bush?

No. I've already seen speculation that the Padres are going to try him on the mound. After just two and a half years. Ow.

I played high school ball with Matt Anderson. He was our #3 starter (no lie). So there's my sole baseball claim to fame.

Okay, did a Redzoner just call Gary Burbank and ask this question on Sports or Consequences?
