Here's the 2007 projected numbers for Livingston vs Saarloos from BP.

If you could only choose between one of these guys for the 5th spot, which one would you chose?

Why?

i would keep livingston and Belise in the rotation and have Saarloos as insurance and drop dead weight Milton!! I am Tired of how 3 pitchers have to battle for #5 spot and Milton keeps his based on wasted salary!!!..

This is one of the cases where it probably doesn't matter either way...

It's kind of like which which arm do you want the needle stuck in....

Livingston is quite a bit younger... So I'd go with him.

Code:
IP H BB SO HR GB% k/9 BB/9 HR/9 WHIP ERA
B. Livingston 111.0 128 38 64 18 47% 5.2 3.1 1.5 1.49 5.59
Kirk Saarloos 81.7 95 32 44 11 55% 4.9 3.5 1.2 1.56 5.17

Based on those numbers, I'd pick Saarloos on the simple fact he has a higher GB%, less HR/9, and his ERA is projected to be lower.

Saarloos won't strike out many, and I'm sure we'll certainly see a lot of balls in play with him, but at least they won't be leaving the yard at the rate or Mr. Livingston, who BTW is only slightly better than Mr. Milton in that area.

Am I wrong for wanting Burton, Saarloos, Livingston and Belisle to ALL make this time in one way or another?

I like Saarloos as the long man in the pen. Saw Livingston for the first time today and I was impressed with how he pitched. Worked quickly and threw strikes. I do however wish that the Reds would start Saarloos against some quality competition so we can see him in the first four or five frames instead of in the middle of a game.

keep both and either DFA Milton or LOOGY Milton.

If it was only one and the rotation already had Milton dropped it would have to be Livingston. We already have four righties and a lefty would be a good option to have in the rotation. That being said Livingston would have the 4th spot rather than the 5th.

You really think Milton could be counted on to get that 1 guy out?

I know I sure don't.

And last time I checked, a LOOGY was a Left handed One Out GuY.

Getting that one out seems kinda important...
