He's a lot more effective at providing RBI opportunities for 3, 4, and 5 behind HIM with his on-base ability.

how can Griffey be in the line-up with so few at bat's this spring. The more things change, the more things stay the same.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand EE 5th and BP 3rd. Flip them and I'm fine.

Why not start Griffey, he's hit the ball well and he makes this team better if he is in the line-up. A guy that has played as long as Griffey doesn't need spring training to get the bat going.

BP earned the 3rd spot in spring training IMO, it should be his to lose.

Especially if he's popping up bunts like in todays game.
Haha the cubbies are batting Alfonso lead-off... what a waste.

I like Dunn in the 2nd spot. First, he gets on base a lot which means 3,4,5 have a chance to drive him home. And he gets more AB this way meaning he has more chances to create runs.
Not a bad lineup from Narron. Id like to see Gonzo and Ross switched, and the BP/EE debate has been destroyed on here, but otherwise its not a bad lineup at all.

The only thing I can think of when looking at the Reds lineup is: it could be a lot worse. Much worse!! Just imagine if Narroon put Dunn at 6th, or Griffey at 3rd, or Gonzo at 2nd (I'm sure we'll see all of those happen this year at some time though). I kind of like the lineup. I don't think it's perfect, but I can certainly live with it.

Does anyone really think BP is going to keep hitting with this kind of power? I mean, I know he projects to hit 20 HR someday... but 30 or 40? It's just a bit strange to see him all of a sudden in the #3 spot traditionally reserved for a team's best hitter. I know Narron is going for the lefty-righty alternation thing, but this seems to be taking it a bit far. Plus, with his speed, I would think Phillips would be more useful at #1 or #2 instead of in one of the prime "middle of the lineup" spots.

He's got a quick bat. If Soriano can hit 40+ I don't see why Phillips can't hit 25-30.

Everybody needs spring training, or they would not have it, especially at age 37.

It really is, he needs to bat 4th for them. He's gonna hit 50 HRs, he's not a leadoff guy. But Soriano in CF is the terrifying part.

I think it's possible. I'm not sure I think it's likely. It would be sweet though.
I like the 6 HR's he has this spring and I think he'll benefit from hitting 3rd. I really think it's a good move by Narron. The Reds are going to need more offense if they're going to compete and Phillips is one guy who has the talent to pick it up a notch. I think he's the type of guy who needs to be challenged too. What do the Reds have to lose?

He's definitely protected in the lineup. Sandwiched 'tween Dunn & Jr.

Pitchers need the time to build arm strength and stamina gradually. The other guys are just there to give then some one to pitch to. All the other stuff (like position battles, working on fundamentals etc.) is incidental. There is plenty of history to base decisions on w/o the spring games and if professional players don't have fundamentals and the like down from years of playing, a couple weeks of drills in spring isn't going to change anything. Other than ensuring health and making sure that guys haven't mutated into something completely different physically (i.e. fat, drugged up, a hidden injury or health issue, etc.) they only need a few days of "reps" to get it back.

I don't think Dunn was asked to bunt. I'm guessing he did that on his own particularly because of the shift put on him. I've seen Griffey do that on occasion.

I was thinking about your comment about Gonzo and Ross switching, but I think they're roughly equal batting wise. But wouldn't Gonzo being a tad faster than Ross? I would prefer to have the faster guy out front, all other things being equal. Maybe I'm missing something.

If Gonzo is faster I'd prefer him in front of the pitcher in case of sac bunts and the like.

Soriano's build is much more like Edwin E's than it is like Phillips's. I could see Edwin hit 25+ homers, but I just don't see Phillips, with that small frame and far shorter reach than either Soriano or Edwin hitting 25 homers.

I don't think we need more than 20 HR from Phillips as long as he is getting on base and moving the guys over. I think hitting .300+ is going to be more important for him.

I like Hamilton, but....Freel has earned it based on last season. You could argue, he's the reason Griffey was moved to right.
Hamilton will get his share of PT...because I can gaurantee you that Freel won't play every day.

Phillips will have to hit .300 to get on base at a decent clip unless he starts taking a lot more walks.

You're right it's the same story, Jr's in CF and batting third again, or wait.....
So you've got a healthy Griffey willing to play right field and you're suggestion is to bench him because he's only played 7 ST games? If he plays today he'll have over 20 ABs I think that'll be plenty for JR. Last year his best games were the ones right after he missed a bunch due to injury.

I don't mind Narron's lineup, but I would make the following changes (just one man's opinion):
1. Freel
2. Phillips (I'm a fan of having the speed at the top)
3. Dunn (I'm fine keeping him higher than 4 or 5 for the OBP & lack of clutch hitting)
4. Encarnacion (Breakout year ahead?)
5. Hatteberg (I feel pretty good when he's at the plate with RISP)
6. Griffey (Shouldn't be in the 3-4-5 just b/c of his name. That said, I'm still a fan of Griff)
7. Ross (More pop than Gonzo)
8. Gonzalez (Better speed than Ross for when the P has to bunt)
9. Harang
The lineup would completely change when Hamilton plays over Freel and/or Conine for Hatteberg.

Sorry, not to blow you off, but my eyes glaze over with all the extra numbers (I forget their order and they essentially look like EIEIO or LSMFT, but I assume the second number is OBP, but maybe it's not. I still prefer to have the speedier player in front instead of the slower player. Just my personal opinion.

Ross was much, much better than Gonzalez last year. Even if he regresses (and I think he will), he's likely to still be better.

Thanks for spelling it out for me again (I'll get it tatooed on my arm!), but I understand now what MTH was telling me now, but I still would prefer Gonzo on-base ahead of Ross. But I'm just a schmo, to be honest with you.

He's not. He's hitting 4 or 5 because the Reds don't have anyone better. He hit 27 Home Runs in 428 ABs last year. I don't think Jr's biggest struggle last year was his diminishing physical abilities, it was his patience or lack there of. If his walk rate gets closer to his career norms he'll have an excellent season.
