THE REBIRTH OF the baseball career of Josh Hamilton was one of the biggest stories during spring training. Hamilton, saddled by drug problems during his stint in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization, earned a roster spot as a reserve outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds on the strength of an outstanding spring.
But you will have to turn to an unfamiliar network for most sports fans to see a different side of the former overall No. 1 pick this month — The Learning Channel.
TLC is running an hour-long special throughout April on the renovation of the Greenville, S.C., birthplace of Shoeless Joe Jackson, the star-crossed Chicago White Sox outfielder banned from baseball for his role in the “Black Sox” scandal following the 1919 World Series.
The TLC special, “A Home Run For Trademark,” stars the original gang from the A&E real estate reality show “Flip This House.” The show revolves around Trademark Properties in Charleston, S.C., owned by the show’s creator, Richard Davis. A&E and Davis parted company after one rocky season — Davis is suing A&E over ownership of the concept — but his new series on TLC, “The Real Deal” is similar to “Flip This House,” which continues its air on A&E with new hosts.
Davis’ relationship with Hamilton dates back to his minor league days with the South Atlantic League’s Charleston River Dogs, where he starred alongside Lewisburg’s Seth McClung, a season after the pair tore up the Appalachian League with the Princeton P-Rays.
Hamilton served as the construction foreman on the transition of Jackson’s 950-foot birthplace into a museum. The project took place just over a year ago as Hamilton was putting his life back together. Trademark Properties bought Jackson’s brick home, then cut it in half to move it from its original location to near West End Field, the new home of the Sally League’s Greenville Drive that opened last season.
The West Virginia Power will make one visit to Greenville this season, opening a four-game series with the Drive on Friday, June 29.
