View Full Version : Pitching Gifts From the A's

As a franchise who has struggled to develop pitching, isn't it great that there are teams like the Oakland A's who are willing to help us out? Just recently we've acquired Aaron Harang, Jared Burton and Kirk Saarloos from the Oakland A's. Those are three pretty good arms and unless David Shafer turns into something we've pretty much given up zilch for these guys. What would this team look like without these three arms?

As thin as pitching has been in recent years I find it amazing that one team has supplied us with 25% of our pitching staff including our ace.

I'm going to stretch this one further. Jose Rijo in the late 80s. No way we win a World Series in the early 90s without Jose Rijo. That was another gift, for basically zilch, from the charitable A's.

We need to find more teams like the A's to deal with. Thanks Oakland...

You know the Jose Guillen for Aaron Harang trade may go down as one of the biggest steals in Redlegs history.

Looks like Jimbo did something right!!

I honestly still feel that Joey Vee had the stuff to be a bigtime reliever. I remember listening to that game Miley made him start in Montreal. My God.

His problem, like a lot of nice arms, was control. As Jeff Brantley is harping day and night, you can't be a reliable reliever unless you pound the strike zone.

I actually think that Saarloos has the potential to do for us out of the pen what Scott Sullivan did for us in the early 90s. The more Saarloos gets used the better that sinker is going to be. I really like him in that role.

To be fair, Bowden did make the Edwin (and I believe Ruben Mateo) for Rob Bell deal. That's another pretty good one.

I thought the same. In retrospect, I think we as Reds fans have been so devoid of real live arms that when the occasional flash in the pan did surface, it became the Great Hope for the Future. On any other team Valentine is a AAAA guy - but on the Reds he was the future bully anchor.

Miley had the most retarded promotion plan of AAA arms I've ever seen. Bring 'em up as a starter, then move 'em to the pen. I don't think i've ever heard of any other team in baseball that used that strategy. Worked out well too - Valentine, Bong, Jesus Sanchez all got called up for one start with the intention of moving to the pen afterwards, and all got their teeth kicked in royally in the process.
