Anyone else think a huge factor in their slow starts is a reluctance to hit pitches on the outer part of the plate to right field? It was nice to see Freel finally figure it out against Hamels and hit one the other way and go with the pitch instead of trying to pull the ball.

If you're referring to his hit tonight, I thought that Freel was simply late on the ball.

Freel has been going opposite field a lot since last season. I really think the Reds struggles against lefties are because these three are not producing as needed. This is an excellent point as the three mentioned (EdE, BP, and Ross) have been unable to hit well at all this season.

The Reds have a .202 BA this season vs lefties. Lets look at how much these three contribute to the lackluster offense.

EdE vs lefties: .136 BA/.269 SLG/.182 OBP

BP vs lefties: .238 BA/ .333 OBP/ .286 SLG

Ross vs lefties .071 BA/ .063 OBP/ .071 SLG

These three are supposed to be the brunt of the offense when facing left handed pitching and are a big reason why we cannot win against lefties.
Here are the scores when facing a left handed starter.

1-4 L vs Lilly (1 ER vs Lilly)
6-1 W vs Maholm (3 ER vs Maholm)
3-6 L vs Duke (3 ER vs Duke)
0-7 L vs Hill (0 ER vs Hill)
1-0 W vs Lilly (1 ER vs Lilly)
6-10 L vs Capuano (0 ER vs Capuano)
1-4 L vs Hamels (1 ER vs Hamels)

That gets us at a 2-5 clip vs lefties. We have scored a grand total of 9 earned runs in 7 games vs these left handed pitchers. That is atrocious. The lack of hitting from these key right handed bats reflect discredit upon the team as a whole.

If he tries to pull it he strikes out though.

True.

In thinking about this I may actually be confusing the AB that he got the hit to right on and a prior AB where he hit a ball foul near the Right Field line but didn't break out of the box right away (possibly because he didn't know where the ball went.)
