The Nationals set a National League record when they failed to score in the first inning Tuesday at Philadelphia. Washington hasn't scored a first-inning run in 20 games this season. The only other NL team to advance 19 games into a season without scoring in the first inning -- and this was quite a surprise -- was the 1975 Reds, a.k.a. the "Big Red Machine." Three American League teams went 20 games into a season without scoring in the first inning, the 1948 White Sox (28 games), 1952 White Sox (22) and 1993 Rangers (21)

The Nats announcers mentioned that the other night when I was watching them. Quite surprising! It also shows you that first inning runs aren't that big a deal.

Getting Fosters bat in the lineup by moving Rose to third sure fixed that problem.

They're also without Nick Johnson...

They are beyond bad, but without your best hitter, not many teams are very good.

I thought Filipe was their best hitter. Isn't he hitting around .300?

I disagree. The Reds were 10-10 after those first 20 games.

After 20 games the BRM led all of baseball in Runs scored (101) 2nd place was 91. That was 35 runs above the league average, the Nats are at 65 RS, 19 runs below the league average.

Right now, Jimbo is probably bouncing up and down in his chair in his excitement at the thought that his team has been compared to the Big Red Machine.

His leather pants don't allow him much bounce...
