1st, props to me for good title thread :beerme: :D

From today's Enquirer:

Narron is trying to keep the lineup somewhat set.

But he keeps talking about giving it an interesting twist one night when Ryan Freel doesn't start against a right-hander.

"If Freel's not in the lineup against a right-hander, I might even lead off (Scott) Hatteberg," he said. "The only reason you don't is the perception that you've got to have a fast guy at the top. That's only reason why."

Hatteberg is certainly not a burner. But he does the two other things you want out of a leadoff guy - he works the count and gets on base. His career on-base percentage is .360, and he's seen an average of 4.02 pitches per plate appearance in his career.

Thoughts???

Narron's had worse ideas. But Hatteberg is better down in the lineup...fifth or sixth. Hamilton's a better option, IMO.
If Phillips is going to hit 2nd or 3rd, he might as well hit 1st.

If Hatteberg leads off, who would bat third according to the Bill James-related threads about hitting your 5th best -- NOT YOUR BEST -- hitter there?

Good grief, does he really obsess over this stuff as much as it seems, or does he just use it for stuff to talk about with the media?

He's not a "run producer"

This ignores the fact that using said logic, not many of the people above him are either.

I wouldn't mind that as long as Hatte stays patient like he usually is and takes alot of pitches.

OBP of .500 so far in the Hat in the leadoff experiment.
