In my keeper base ball league i am being offered Adrian Beltre (3b Seattle) and Noah Lowry (SP- SF) for Roger Clemens (SP- NYY). Would you take the deal? This is my Roster currently.

Hard to say what Clemens will do this season, but since it's a keeper league, I'd love to have Lowry for future seasons.

I'd see if you could get something different than Beltre, but that shouldn't be the sticking point.

Thanks Highlifeman21. That is good advice.

The other thing to consider is that if Clemens gets off to a quick start his value will go up, even in a keeper league. If I owned Clemens I would trade him straight up for Lowry but since Beltre is also being offered I would see what else you could get instead of Beltre. I'm curious as to how you are doing in this league? You are Cincinnati Red heavy and picking favorite players over better fantasy players might make it more fun but usually doesn't work that well in the standings.

I am currently 12th out of 14 teams. I finished 4th last year.

I accepted the trade and dropped Cody Ross. I decided I was getting a good pitcher for Clemons plus getting a good player in Beltre. Thanks for the advice that was given.

I would've tried to deal Mariano. I wouldn't have dropped him...certainly not for Darrin Erstad.

Gallen5862
05-30-2007, 01:56 PM
I know but was in a roster jam. I needed a outfielder with Freel Hurt. Erstad can also play 1B which will help with having Laroche at 1B. We will be having either 6 or 8 keepers. Any suggestions on who to keep? Remember I will be getting Adrian Beltre (3b Seattle) and Noah Lowry (SP- SF) for Roger Clemens (SP- NYY).

One of the first things I would do was try to move some of your Reds players. It is never a good idea to have too many players from the same team on fantasy. It is OK if they have a blow out game, but more often than not, they will not all produce.

As for your keepers
Dunn- seems to be only source of power.
Pierre- steals are hard to get.
Jeter
Harang
Oswalt
Gorzalany

Then I would look at
Bailey and Miller to see how they do.

Thanks Redsfan for the advice. Would you also consider watching Hamilton or Zimmerman? This is my current roster showing the Lowry and Beltre trade. Does that change your Keeper advice?

If I'm you, I definitely keep these six players:

Derek Jeter - All-around stats especially valuable at SS.
Adam Dunn - Still young, will hit HR even if he is traded.
Ryan Zimmerman - Very young, just starting to reach his potential at 3B.
Roy Oswalt - Your best pitcher
Aaron Harang - Not far behind Oswalt at this point.
Josh Hamilton - Always need to have a homer pick IMO. He'll get better.

If you decide to keep 8, then consider these guys:

Homer Bailey - duh.
Juan Pierre - He's a one-dimensional player at best. Depending on your stat set-up, he could be valuable, but I tend to avoid him.

If you are in Reds league, you might want to consider shopping Dunn, Hamilton, EdE, Bailey, Freel and Harang to other owners. It's nice to have Reds, but too many of them can sink your squad. See if you can acquire some better offensive cornerstones by playing to your opponents' weakness. A package deal for a lower top-ten player (David Wright, Grady Sizemore, Jason Bay, someone like that) would make your keepers look a lot more attractive IMO.

Just my two cents.

Phillips is an interesting fantasy player as well. I failed to note him when I gave you advice before. I'd definitely include him as a keeper over Pierre and Homer. Probably Pierre.

Thanks for the new advice Redeye. Still trying this year even though a long shot but really trying to get set up for next season as well.

Cameron is a definite upgrade over Kendall. Mike is hitting his stride right now and can be a very complete player when he's on a hot streak. Kendall is basically worthless at this point in his career. Good move there.

I'm ambivalent about the Arroyo-for-Looper move. Looper has never really impressed me much, and Arroyo has (plus he plays for the Reds). I still have confidence that Bronson will be able to put up solid stats by the end of the year, barring injury of course. If this is just a question of who is going to ride your bench, I probably would have kept Arroyo. Then again, Looper plays for a team that (should be) much better than the Reds, so he probably has more potential for wins. Not a bad move to be sure, but I don't see it making a great difference in your fortunes.

The Carpenter move, BTW, is a great one. You've got two aces (Oswalt and Harang) already, and a third one will probably really help your team dominate. Freel is useful as a speed/position flexibility option, but he's injured and totally replaceable. Good job.

Thanks Redeye. I am trying to salvage something of this season and trying to upgrade if possible. I am also trying to get better Keeper options if I can. I am also trying to use the Dl spots not only as place holders but also try to grab some talent into those slots.

I believe it was a good choice to drop Looper because it could be reasonable to expect another trip to the DL being a former reliever. Altough Lugo has struggled, anybody in that Boston lineup has value.

I can definately see you like the Reds with a total of 9 players. Carpenter is done for the year so you can drop him if you need another DL spot.

Gallen its great getting advice, however its your team and you gotta decide whats best.I mean I noticed you have asked about every move you have made.I did that a lot last season until a really good money player and friend told me I had to start making my own moves if I ever wanted to run a successful team.A little advice every now and then is ok concerning trades, players et all,but you want to run your own team and not everyone your asking for advice.
Sorry I hope you don't take this the wrong way.I'm not trying to be harsh, just trying to offer advice.

Thanks uoduck and Jr's Boy. I understand what you are saying about advice. I am just not use to keeper leagues. I will put Freel on dl and drop Carpenter for another player.

Gallen after seeing your roster. I have to ask how many keeper players are protected each year? Second of all if you can I would defintly start poaching young players and cutting your losses on some of the long term dead weight on your roster.

It is currently 6 players but a vote will be made to see if it can go to 8 players. What players do you like for my keepers or what players you suggest I try to poach?

I dropped Ryan Freel and Moisis Alou for Melky Cabrera and Chris Ray. Hopefully that helps my team plus I activated Hamilton from the Dl. This is my new roster.

Roy Oswalt
Aaron Harang
Adam Dunn
Derrick Turnbow
Josh Hamilton
Brandon Phillips

if they let you keep 8 then my 2 more are:
Ryan Zimmerman
Derek Jeter

I may be a little Reds biased.

Thanks for the advice GoReds33. Its hard to keep a balnce of piching and offense plus seeing who might be available in draft. How did you decide between Phillips over Zimmerman and Jeter? I am interested in getting all the info I can get. Thanks.

GoReds33
08-15-2007, 05:16 AM
I think that Phillips has years of tremendous production ahead of him. I decided against Jeter because I think his stolen base numbers will go down. I really like Ryan Zimmerman, but an equal replacment is not tremendously hard to find. He's an above average hitter with descent power numbers. Sounds like about 150 MLB players. Honestly, I would like to keep your whole roster. I think Zimmerman and Hamilton might be interchangable. I think that Hamilton's power will be above average, as will Zimmermans overall hitting. I just gave hamilton the benefit of the doubt because he plays for the Reds. Rickie Weeks has had a horrible year. I think he would be fairly easy to get next year. Jeter and Phillips I think will have similar seasons. The only difference, is that Jeter will do that on the way down.

Stephenk29
10-16-2007, 10:28 PM
Jeter, Phillips, Dunn, Harang, Oswalt, Zimmerman/Ray

If your in a 14 team league Jeter will be a huge keeper. There isn't any more than 4 or 5 shortstops better than he is. Plus a .325 average isn't easy to come by with decent power and RBIs. There Harang and Oswalt seem like musts because pitchers will be an even bigger priority in a large league like this. I'm usually against keeping a closer since its only one stat affected, but the 14 teams league makes me consider Ray pretty hard. Phillips and Dunn for obvious reasons. Phillips is your best fantasy position player I'd say. .280ish30/100/30 is beastly. I don't agree with Hamilton at all. You can't even guarantee me he's going to start for the Reds, plus stay healthy. Reds fans seem to be biased towards Hamilton in fantasy:)

I agree with this for sure. You currently have only one guy who will have a batting average over .300 (Jeter), 1 guy with 35/110 potential (Dunn) and 2 guys who at best will be around 30/90 (Phillips & Zimmerman)

In a 14 team league you are way ahead of the curve with SPs, having Oswalt, Harang, and Dice K.

I would draft the best offensive player for the next 3-5 rounds, looking for 25-90 potential in all of them if possible. Maybe try to find another steals option.

I think you took Nathan a little early, as I would never use a 7th round pick to take a closer. I tend to take my first closer more in the 9th or 10th round. Never done a 14 team league though so...

I would try to get a sleeper next round. If Bruce is still available, take him. You already have a SS, so cross off Lugo. I like LaRoche, so that's probably not a bad pick. BTW, Weeks was a good pick. I think he's going to have a good season after his second half rebound last year.

Stephenk29

No way you take Bruce that early. He would still be available in the last 5 rounds for sure. I would go for some guys that are proven and you know are every day starters for sure. I'd get the best offensive player available again.

Not sure I like the Weeks pick...kind of wasted at UT. I would look to shop Phillips for a monster OFer.

If you look at someone like Randy Winn, he might likely bring what Weeks will...with less risk. And I would guess at least a few rounds later.

I don't really like the team so far. The Weeks pick was very bad. It's not that he wont be good, its that he's at a high risk to get injured. There's also no reason to use up that UTL spot so quick. Probably go for a OF or 1B, but you need a big bat with HR/RBI help. Zimm/Jeter/Weeks all project less than 25HR, but all at most 90 RBI.

Another bad thing about Weeks is that he's a low AVG type of guy, and that's going to hurt a lot with Dunn in there. He's only had 112 RBI in 316 games (2 seasons).

True, but none of the three should be taken that early. Granted I don't know who was available at the time so I could very easily be talking out of my butt, but an educated guess tells me there are some better options. A guy like Adrian Gonzalez should be available I would think (someone of his production I mean 290/25/90). Hard to say not seeing the draft board though.

The thing with Weeks is his position. If you draft him, you pretty much have to play him at 2b.

I would go with Bonderman. Personally, I think Lugo is going to have a terrible year. He was really bad last year. I would try to see if you can get him as a steal in a later round. It really depends on the outfielders left though. If you can get a good one, then I would consider that too.

Plus why would you pick up a bench guy when you still don't even have a starting catcher, third outfielder or several pitchers spots open?

mlbfan30

What's your obsession with SP? Arroyo will probably give close to neutral or negative value for the team. You have 1 closer. You need another quality guy if any are left.

Why would you buy low on a SP after a SP run? That doesnt make any sense

Your team is very weak in RBI and probably AVG and SB.

Votto and Jackson are sleepers that I would look into.

Votto is a better fantasy hitter than Laroche because of his steals. Conor will probably put up very similar numbers to Laroche. I have no idea why you got him in the 5th round. That seems like a major waste of a pick, along with some (a lot) of others. You still only have 1 real closer and that makes no sense at all unless its some kind of 10x10 h2h league.

Stephenk29
03-08-2008, 02:41 AM
Closers tend to be less valuable because you can find saves through job changes etc if you watch the waiver wire. Lidge is one break down away from Gordon being the closer permanently for example.
