Sure he could stick with #52, but I think they'll give him a more "indentifyable" number. Any average joe can wear 40-60 (with some exceptions, obviously.) I say he gets #27.

No pressure being a young Cincinnati pitcher to come up and wear #27. Hopefully we can get a similar result (with a longer career).

I would like him to wear the number of either Andy MacGaffigan or Roger Salkeld

A longer career than Mr. Red?

No joke.

I think that's what they'll tag him with though. I'd say #23 if not for Moeller, unless that's who they send out to bring him up. A number below 20 seems unlikely for a pitcher, so that rules out numbers #15 and #16. Even though Milton has been on the 15 day DL for what seems like a year, he's taken #22. #34 might be available, I didn't check, all I know is that was Claussen's old digits. I think Billy Hatcher has taken #32. Once you get past #40, for a pitcher, you're either a journeyman, or a nobody rookie, not a big name star. There's my reasoning.

I got curious so I went over and looked at the 40 man and filled in who had which number (slow afternoon at work).

His only options of numbers not worn by someone on the 40 man this year, are (numbers lower than 60):

15
16
36
46
48
50
52

Homer has 22 right now in Triple-A. I’d bet if he isn’t given a number of someone not currently up (like Keppinger’s 27) then he will probably wear 15, 16, or 36. None are exactly dazzling but he’s a rookie so he can deal with it. Remember when Larkin was first called up he wore 15 for his partial season.

TC81190: 34 is shown on the roster as belonging to Jerry Gil, so that *might* take it out of contention, same as Keppinger wearing 27. I wouldn't mind getting a Homer jersey later on this year (if he sticks) so hopefully it will be a "good" number. I'd say (my Dave Matthews Band fan coming out) that 34, 36, 40, or 41 would be cool. But ultimately 27 would hopefully seem like a good fit for him.

Arroyo is 61, Johan Santana is 57, Peavy is 44, Bartolo Colon is 40, Roy Oswalt is 44, Pedro Martinez is 45, etc. etc. There are plenty of star pitchers above #40 in the majors

I'm curious as to what would make a number "dazzling?"

Ya know, good numbers in life. Like in Reds history, numbers such as 11 or 14 (to name a couple from the last two generations that aren't retired). Or for basketball fans it would be numbers like 23 or maybe 33.

We were all there in whatever team sport you participated in on whatever level. You always wanted a "good number" when suiting up. I remember one year in junior high basbetball I got stuck with 54, that's not dazzling, but I always made sure I got 11 or 21 (my two faves) in baseball from coach pitch up through high school ball.

Gotcha. I usually wore 7 or 11 from what I remember in baseball. Football I was always a lineman so I was stuck in the 60s and 70s. There are no "dazzling" numbers out there for linemen. :)

From Rob Butcher per 1530, he is starting FRIDAY and will wear #34.

Good news. I've been saying all along I wanted to go to his first start if it was possible (i.e. in Cincy or close by) because I watched him with the Dragons and followed him all through his rise in the minors. Well, I'm actually going to be home this weekend but my sister graduates from high school at 5 pm Saturday so I wouldn't have made it. Now I will.
