Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that the Tigers have traded Mike Maroth to the Cardinals for an as yet undisclosed return.

The Cardinals were clearly looking for rotation help, signing Tomo Ohka to a minor league deal after Braden Looper joined Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder on the disabled list. The trade clears way for Kenny Rogers to rejoin the Tigers' rotation.

What in the name of Dave Dombrowski is going on?

Trading a decent, young, Kenny Rogers-like arm to keep a 42 yr old Kenny Rogers.

That's borderline insane.

Walt Jocketty strikes again.

When your minors is chock full of good, young arms, you can afford to deal a pitcher like Maroth without worry.

No mention of the return though. He didn't get Maroth for nothing if I had to guess.

Maroth ain't cheap anymore, either -- $2.95 million this year.

Why we the reds not right there trying to swoop up Morath?

Hopefully because we're not in the market for soft tossing lefties anymore.

Maroth's a ground ball pitcher that gives up way too many home runs and strikes nobody out. He's basically a southpaw version of Kirk Saarloos in that regard, except that Maroth makes nearly three times the amount of money that Saarloos makes.

If I'm the Reds, I don't want Maroth for $2.95 million this season.

Welcome to the NL Central Mr Maroth. May all your pitches at GABP land in the Ohio. [Assuming we never acquire you.]

Maybe becasue he's bad.

This year, his ERA is in the low 5's, but his DIPS ERA is 6.35. He gives up tons of HR's and has struck out less than he walks.

Last year, his ERA was in the low 4's, but his DIPS was close to 6.

He's had trouble staying healthy, and is starting to get expensive.

He's been Milton bad. And in a park that pitches much better than GABP.

Because he's a bad pitcher making money. A guy who walks more than he K's and can't keep the ball in a spacious park. Kirk Saarloos part 2.

For the last 2 seaosns, Maroth has been a worse calibre pitcerh than Eric Milton (and I'm not joking).

EDIT: I see Cyclone already made the accurate Saarloos comparison.

The point I was making was possible upside in age.

Looks like the Tigers then are cutting dead weight. They traded Ledzema to the Braves yesterday.

One Caveat - nobody else is reporting this. Wonder if Wonderboy got duped.

Somebody tell the Reds that it's not too early to make moves.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals have traded for Tigers lefty Mike Maroth. Maroth, a 30 year-old southpaw, is most famous for his 21 loss season in 2003.

Maroth has always been hittable, but his normally fine control has been off this year. He seems to be healthy following surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow over a year ago. Maroth makes $2.95MM this year and won't be a free agent until after 2008. It's a smart move by Walt Jocketty, who, by the way, could be looking to leave the Cardinals after this season or 2008.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the deal was finalized today and it's for a player to be named later.

So the deal is for a PTBNL.

Jocketty will never live down the Haren deal. This one smacks of desperation.

I also think he's going to be prone to injury. He's spent some good time on the DL if I recall.

Just another crappy left hander that will 2 hit the Reds.

I don't really think Maroth is going to get much better.
