This win by the Reds put them in first place by a half a game. The bullpen pitch four scoreless innings. Something we can only dream about this season.

Both of those lineups include a couple of the best non-Hall-of-Fame lineups I've seen - yes, there are three guys (Bench, Morgan, Sutton) who are HOFers - but there are several others who were still a simple joy to watch - and three (Rose, Concepcion, Garvey) for whom there could be strong arguments.

Even though the season wasn't half over this was a must win series for the Reds. The Dodgers had got off to a blazing start and were ahead of the Reds by 7 1/2 games. IIRC the series had been sold out for months. I can remember folks around the home area saying if the Reds were to get back in it they needed a sweep. But that didn't happen and the Dodgers won the division going away. I think I remember watching this game on NBC's Game of the Week. Good game with the Reds barely hanging on to the win.
