Can Narron out Tony Tony? :)

The only person who can out Tony Tony is Tony.

Because just when you think you've seen it all, Tony will out Tony himself.

Narron pinch hits Castro for Hamilton? That's nothing says Tony, as he sends SoSO up to bat clean-up.

Did they seriously call it the "Narron Line"? Wow - that says a lot about our manager.

Meanwhile, I am seeing a bunch of empty seats behind home plate and first. We are quickly becoming Montreal.

It would be a complete travesty, if Tony does that (and it would not surprise me). It was pretty obvious from Harang's reaction that the pitch got away - and for LaRussa to be holding a grudge for something like that for so long - and to deny one of the better pitchers in the league the honor of being in the All-Star game is simply bush league.

I just think that's unfair. We have no idea whether the Reds even talked to Percival or whether he was interested in coming to the Reds. Everyone likes to say that Krivsky likes old relievers or junkballers without considering the fact that those are the guys are generally available. It'd be great if the Krivsky could pick up a great, young fire balling reliever without trading a key prospect or position player or if a top FA arm actually wanted to come to Cincinnati w/out the Reds having to grossly overpay them but I don't think that's as easy as everyone seems to think it is.

I agree... I was being sarcastic man, I realize Wayne can't just go out and get guys like Jonathon Broxton, but when a guy like Percival says he wants to come back and scouts watch him throw 91-95 still, you give the guy a shot, what could it hurt?

When a player's too expensive or not on the market, you have a built-in excuse for the Reds not acquiring him.

When a player's available, he doesn't want to come to the Reds.

From every angle, Wayne can be defended against criticism in this way.

Yep. And I have to ask (if anyone might know)... what is the REDS record when leading or tied after 7 innings?

I'd guess it's not good either. The 8th inning has just been a big black hole of suckiness this year. I'd love to know what the the team ERA in the 8th inning is this year. I bet it isn't pretty.

Nobody has a good record when trailing after 8.

True, but generally teams get lucky enough to pull a few rabbits out of the hat. No such luck for the Reds this year.

30-50 says it all.

"We just have to turn this thing around", is what the Reds will say...

All they have to do is go 50-30 in the second half.

Reds Bullpen 6/29/2007

IP H R ER BB SO ERA
2 6 3 3 0 0 13.50

Hittable. That's our bullpen.

I also disagreed with bring in McBeth into the game in that situation, but it probably doesn't matter. It's over.

Yeah the bullpen sucks. It's still no reason to leave your starter in so he can become a rag arm. Not saying Narron did that tonight; just in general.

Yep. And I have to ask (if anyone might know)... what is the REDS record when leading or tied after 7 innings?

I don't know what the team's record is when leading or tied after 7 innings, but the runs by inning totals seem to indicate that the opposition is - for lack of a better word - toying with the Reds.

Inning Reds Ops Diff
1st 40 70 -30
2nd-6th 229 202 27
7th on 102 147 -45

The opposition jumps ahead in the first inning. The Reds claw back slowly until after 6 innings the RA and RS are almost even. Then the opposition feasts on the Reds bullpen and pulls away.

The bullpen isn't the only culprit in the late game collapses.

RS/Inn. Reds Ops
1st-6th 0.56 0.57
7th on 0.43 0.66

Through six innings the Reds score at almost exactly the same rate as their opponents do. From the 7th inning on enemy batsmen up the ante, while the output of the Reds drops off approximately 25% per inning.

Brian Matusz, baby. Brian Matusz. If the Reds are going to stink it up then they might as well do it the right way. I want that number one pick next year. Brian Matusz is going to be a stud who will move very quickly. He's a 6'4" 200 pound lefty from the U. of San Diego.

Kind of sad, really. The guy gives us 7 innings of 6-hit ball with one run, and the bullpen gives us 2 innings of 6 hit ball with 3 runs.

Critical mistake. Bringing in Marcus McBeth in a situation where he had to face all the Cardinal heavy hitters was a recipe for disaster. Following him with Coutlangus was even more disaster. Then you get the Salmon trick of allowing inherited runners to score. Even our savior, Ricky Stone allows a hit.

This has to be the most hittable bullpen in history. In 160+ innings, Reds relievers have allowed well over 200 hits--heading toward 300.

I watched Franklin tonight--a pitcher we had--come in and do his job with a 1.42 ERA. someone we thought was fodder. The same could be said for the late Josh Hancock. The Cardinals (as pitiful as their 35-41 record is) came in with relievers with 3.18, 1.08, 1.42, and 1.67 ERA's. We countered with pitfhers with 7.00, 4.78, and 3.44 (and 0.00 in the case of Stone) ERA's. Lack of talent? Maybe lack of coaching staff or using the bullpen wrong, whatever that means.

Truth is, winners win and losers lose. Plain and simple. A Ryan Franklin can be a loser in Cincinnati ( 24 IP, 27 H, 12 ER, 16 BB, 18 SO 4.44 ERA) and go to another team (38 IP, 30H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 13 SO 1.42 ERA) for some reason. There has to be something wrong with what the Reds are doing, whether it be using the relievers wrong or instruction. i don't know which.

Of course you can also point to the offense that only scored 2 runs (on another home run--they seemingly can't score any other way) on a starting pitcher with a high ERA. Batting coach? Beats me, but changes have to be made regardless. To argue against this is foolish.

Will someone please tell me again that "this club is getting better and is headed in the right direction". I'm depressed.

I was pretty sure the Reds would finish below .500 this season but this is getting ugly.

I have no problem with the young bullpen arms taking their lumps and learnining on the job, That's all well and good.

I do have a problem however with this Manager and Coaching staff being anywhere around the young talent we do have.

Perfect example of the ignorace of casual fans.

Teenager behind me was irrate because Brandon Phillips smiled in the field after the Cards tied it. Yes, I am not kidding. He was up in arms over a smile. We joke about it in the chat room all the time during games, but this nimrod was actually making the case that if we had a team of Hatteburgs who didn't smile we'd be sucessfull. But that darn Brandon smiled so consequently our team stinks.

The fact that the pitchers gave up the runs was ignored.

Philips fine defensive work, nice offensive output and base stealing was ignored.

Oh, and his proof that his theory was dead-on correct? He played baseball on his highschool JV team.

I can't believe 35,000+ showed up for the game.

I can't believe I was a part of the 35,000+ who showed up for the game.

Lots of Cardinal fans though. They must have come from Louisville or Southern Indiana.

There was one hard hit ball in the 8th. One. And two of the hits, one Gonzo had just shifted himself OUT of where the ball was hit and one was under the glove.

The double was a bloop. Left handed hitter with about 4 inches to spare down the left field line. Who plays Chris Duncan there?

Noticed Jerry did the young guys. Friday nights, the old guys must have a 9pm curfew or something.

Speaking of old guys, the ushers were in rare form last night. Wow. Must have had directives to not smile all night.

That's bad news if the ushers are reverting back to Riverfront Stadium-type surliness.

One of the best parts of the new park is the ushers letting you sit basically anywhere you wanted as long as someone else did not have a ticket for that seat. As well as their general friendliness; they're much nicer than in the good old days!

Lohse strikes out Pujols but the umpire instead calls it a ball. I look forward to the day MLB goes to questec. That will eliminate cheating such as that, i.e. giving Pujols and Bonds smaller strikezones.

Was anyone else irate that Salmon threw a strike to Molina in the 8th with 1 out, runners on 2nd and 3rd, and Kennedy on deck? Because everyone in my section of the park was a little POd about it...

BTW, after 7 years on RedsZone, this is my 1st game thread post...and it's on yesterday's thread. Just like me, always a little behind the curve...
