The Reds will probably never make up the 13.5 games they need to catch the Brewers but they're fun to watch again. Pete Mackanin has somehow breathed life back into this once comatose crew and at least for me salvaged the second half of the season.
I can't help but think that simply changing managers changed the attitude of the team, not anything in particular that Mackanin is doing. He's using the same players and using very similar lineups.
You gotta think that a new manager was simply a release of the pressure valve that caused these guys to loosen up and play better ball.

i watch with more intensity now that bland old narron is gone as mananger. He brought no fire and hardly ever argued calls. Pete is out there regulary to argue i like to see a manager that protects his players.

I think there's a noticeable change for the better in the team's psyche. Definitely looks like they're havin' more fun out there. If they can keep this little hot streak going a while longer things might get really interesting down the stretch.
If nothing else, watching a Reds game is something I look forward to and enjoy again.

I havent looked at stats but it seems the reds are being more aggressive on the basepaths under Mackanin. They are stealing bases, double steals, sending runners home to put pressure on the defense, and while it hasnt always worked (running on Francoer and BP getting picked off come to mind) it has been more fun to watch.
Under Narron this team seemed to sit back and wait for the 3 run homer.

I just feel like this is the way that this team played last year for the most part and probably should have been playing this year too. As far as any effect that changing the manger had had I am not sure. But Weathers was on the radio a week or so after the change and he said that the relievers felt like they werent going to be pulled after giving off a hit to the leadoff batter but instead they were feeling like they were being given a chance to "clean up their own mess." He felt like guys never got into a rhythm that way.

Freel's post-game interview seemed to hint that Mackanin now has the Reds playing as a team, vs. the collection of every-man-for-himself guys before.
Whatever Mackanin's doing, keep doin' it!
